If you're not over 25 you wont get National Living Wage, you will only get National Minimum Wage. If you're earning more than NMW you're already doing better than a lot of people out there already, just because some people have been their less doesn't mean they're going to be raking it in, I'm guessing by the time you get to 25 the government expect you to have more financial obligations. However I'm sure this will leave this open to older people not being hired or let go, due to having to pay them more than under 25's.
  • Because I've only been self employed for just over a year - I make less money doing that than in my full time job, as I mentioned it's only extra income, but tops me up so me and my partner can do the things we want - holidays, dinners, saving etc... Plus we are looking to get a place together next year and the banks will laugh us out of the application if I only have a year of self employed accounts to show them.
Never too proud to accept help, and never to stubborn to give it! :j
  • I am in exactly the same position! Assistant manager earning £6.70 - Iv mentioned a payrise but they just say oh yeas we will get round to it and nothing happens! Safe to say Im looking for another job as Im not working in a managerial position with alot of responsibilities for NMW!
  • It's good to know it's not just me. I'll stick it out until I've got my mortgage and then I think it'll be time to look elsewhere. Such a shame because I love working here, but I'm not working for nothing! :T

    You're not though.

It doesn't sound like you've sold yourself to your employer. They are paying you what they can get away with.

It's a typically british trait. I wont ask for more money, I'll wait until my employer notices me.
  • Are you sure they won't raise your under 25+supervisor wage in line with the 25+standard wage so you'll be getting the same per hour above the standard wage as you are now?

When I was a supervisor+key holder for a high street retail chain, I got paid something like 70p per hour more. It always went up inline with the min wage raises even though technically it didn't have to.
