Sky Broadband

Hello Ladies and Gents, first time on this forum so be gentle, I have just came off the phone with Sky after cancelling my TV package and as I have Broadband with them also I was advised not to cancel this right away as it makes it difficult for another ISP to take over the line. Has anyone else came across this and more importantly is it true. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Of course it is true !

Why do you think they'd bother lying to you ?

Putting it simply - if you cancel your phone and broadband and then order with another provider you'll end up with a break in service - if you don't want to be without BB for anything from 14 to 31 days the sensible thing to do is to leave the talk and BB in place- speak to your new provider and ask them to take over your existing service. That way you don't end up with a break in service and the changeover happens same day.

Did you tel the Sky agent you thought they were lying BTW ?

They did the right thing telling you the best way to handle moving provider - they could have let you just go ahead and cancel like you wanted and be stuck without BB for a month .

Sometimes working with the uninformed public is a thankless task !

(You're actually quite lucky it was Sky- as they make sure you know not to cancel but to transfer- some of the other big name providers don't bother telling you)

If you change part of your Package - don't the providers issue a new contract for 12/18 month- and charge you more for Broadband Only Service?

I would have cancelled the TV Package - 30 days notice - when I had the new Broadband installation date confirmed - to be on the safe side!

Some may - but with Sky the TV and the Talk & BB contracts are seperate so no.
They are all different though- for example I was shocked when my BF moved home and as he's with Virgin it started a new 18 month contract whereas with my Sky if I move home it doesn't affect the contract length .

  • Hello Frank777, my contract is not up till March, but Sky have said that once the contract is up I will not be locked in and just pay as you go if you like till I switch.

TV/Phone contracts can be a minefield - SKY take the right approach - I'm on the MSE Deal *£5.34* for a YEAR'S SKY broadband and line rental.

condaw51 - don't forget to check out the cashback websites before you change your Broadband Provider

Sky is unusual in that respect, almost every other provider does a free home move and starts you on a new min term contract. With VM, almost anything starts you on a new min term contract...

Your contract does not expire, only your minimum term does. After that you are on 30 days notice.

Trouble is stuff like what a home move will do to your contract aren't the kind of things people think to check when moving provider .

The differences between the providers add up though- I was really surprised that BT charge for caller display for example ( I think TT do too) - it would never have occurred to me to check that was an extra and not included in line rental.
