  • Ok great. I've found a few companies that look like they fit the bill. So many just offer UPVC and that's all. I agree wood does look better (after spending the last two days looking up at people's Fascias and soffits!!)

whatever you choose (and if you go UPVC make sure the the wooden fascias etc are removed , not capped) £3200 is FAR FAR too high

Another expert here who just looks at the price without looking at the house. Pan tiles yes a tad high, slates? About right.

I can't see a painter and decorator wanting to replace the guttering but I'll give it a go....

Why do you want to replace the guttering? It might simply need a clean and wipe over, a couple of new screws in the support brackets, or a seal or two replaced - none of this means it must be replaced.

Nothing wrong with capping, if the wood is fairly sound, saves all that future painting."Dosent look as good?" who the hell stands there looking at guttering? Its virtually impossibe to do a good paint job with the guttering in place, which is why its usually a bodge.

Dunraven did a capping on a colleagues house. They smashed off the soffits, took axes to the existing fascias and bargeboards, hacked and split all the timbers, made nothing good, applied no treatment, sealed no edges, ripped off all the overhanging roofing felt, fitted no eaves protection, then fitted fascias that fell off and new poor quality guttering that did not fit. Nothing unusual in any of this - they charged many, many thousands for ruining the house and the owners were happy.

This all occurred because after almost 30 years the fascias needed a little bit of TLC. They could easily have been properly done for well under £1000. Instead the cowboys rode into town and brought the idiots with them.

Then people say to me "Nothing wrong with capping"!

So there are cowboys in any trade, what does that prove?

Spot on! There are people in this world who believe ignorance is bliss. Others look at the capping and think of the moisture sweating behind the capping and destroying the timber. Of course the idiots you install the capping want this to occur. When the timber rots the capping will fall off. In a few years time they will be going around door to door saying " Your capping is coming away - you need a new cowboy to bodge that up. Special offer today, only £5000"

    What are you on about?

If the wood is near , or beyond repair , you need to remove it and install UPVC or reinstate good wood , if you reinstate good wood , you can then use your eyes to see the state of the wood over the years , if you use UPVC , the same

My point is if you cap wood , then short of up close and personal inspection , which i wager is not going to happen with your average householder , then damage can occur over time that then will cost more to sort , than if you had removed the wood in the first place
