I need to ring them this afternoon to discuss so any advice would be welcome.
    Yes, here's some advice:

...you are duty bound to keep your losses to a minimum, so can you ask the delivery people, or the seller, for a shorter delivery window - say a couple of hours first thing in the morning - so that you can go to work afterwards?
Of course that may not be possible for you, but just throwing out ideas.

I respectfully suggest that claiming a loss of £110 is ridiculous.

Four hours at £7 an hour is a much more reasonable sum.

Did you really have to sit at home doing nothing for a whole day while waiting for the delivery?
Surely you could've filled your time productively with household chores, decorating, gardening, etc... or do you expect your mattress seller to pay you for doing that?

'Just as the company was a bit cheaper and I don't mind taking one day off for a delivery but as they didn't tell me until the day to was due to arrive I have wasted a days holiday and will have to rebook one.'

Hmm, compensation culture attack? I'm sorry but I thought u said you had no holidays left?

I'd cancel, wait for a refund and rebook with someone who delivers on a Saturday. Check reviews of the retailer to see if there are lots of comments on failed deliveries. I always check tracking information as well so I know if its on the van or not the late night before. Then you have an indication as to whether its going to turn up. I did this for two large rugs that turned up today. I knew I had to wait in as they were on the van and likely to turn up (not foolproof).

I have to book one unpaid!

My hourly rate is £14.36 per hour and they only time slot they can put me in is 12-6. So 6 Hours = £86.16 using that theory. I'm not sure how my losses could be any less?

Two days before they confirmed via text it was being delivered as expected.

Thank you for your replies - I was just asking for advice - not a slating for not wanting to be out of pocket.

Also, to note. The mattress hadn't been delivered to the warehouse from Ireland so they would have known much more in advance that they were unable to deliver then on the day itself. Had they let me know just the day before the whole issue could have been avoided.

Where did the £110 figure come from?

The original figure was just a rounded figure based on a 7.5 hour working day, actual figure is £107.70 - which is the amount I would lose for a days non paid leave.

Less about 30% for tax/NI you'd have paid.
£75 in your pocket. Minus any travelling costs, say £5.
£70 is closer to the income value of a day's work for you.

Fair enough - I hadn't factored the NI/Tax part of it but the 2 hours on the phone and travelling to the store makes £75 a fair estimate.
    Scoops :)
