Don't forget you'll pay 5% VAT on domestic fuel and 20% on the business side, so you'd have to sort out how you split the VAT from a common supply tank

    Shhhhh!!! ;)

Thanks for the replies, I think heating will be the main energy usage in the house
Although the ovens in the commercial kitchen would be on for several hours each day.

However the commercial kitchen is around 100m away from the house so I've come to the concluesion that a oil boiler in the house wouldn't be able to supply heating / hot water to the kitchens anyway - am assuming it would be cold by the time it got there?????

Am leaning towards the idea of getting an oil tank for heating and hot water in the house and using calor gas bottles for the ovens in the commercial kitchen and also the house kitchen (as they do now)

Don't see why we'd need separate meter readings for the house and commercial kitchens, you'd just proportion off the usage for the accounts/bills

Because your commercial kitchen is a business and therefore you'll need to run it off a commercial tariff., on which you pay 20% VAT, not 5%.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You wouldn't run the hot water for the taps through the link!!

You'd have a heat exchanger at the house end, and a heat exchanger(s) at the kitchen end, and a closed loop between the two, in insulated pipe and heavily dosed with antifreeze. At the kitchen end would be an ordinary indirect cylinder to heat the hot water.

A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • We use oil to heat our house (loving the oil price crash!!). On our road 2 out of circa 20 houses use LPG so oil is more popular. We use the Oil Club which negotiates bulk rates to ensure we don't pay over the odds but there are no contracts so we would be free to order from any supplier at any time which I like.

For cooking we use electricity - I imagine this will cheaper than LPG (not to mention a good deal less hassle which shouldn't be underestimated). Is this a possibility for you at all? These days with induction hobs I understand it can be cheaper to cook with electricity even if you have access to mains gas...

  • With one central plant room you could have pipework to each building with a Heat Interface Unit at each property. This will provide you with space heating and direct hot water without the need have hot water cylinders in each building and just one boiler and one fuel store etc...

This will travel 100m easily and you can include metering on one or both HIUs.

This will run of any high temperature boiler such as biomass, oil or lpg.

Or you could go for two GSHPs one in each property with one ground loop. This will be a big outlay but will allow you to qualify for 20 years of the commercial rhi and will give you cheaper running costs in the log run.
