I had a long scarf that was a 'tube with sealed ends'. My nan used to push her fist into one end of it, pull it onto my head, wind the remaining scarf bit around my neck and then stuff the loose end into the neck of my school gaberdine mac!
Another one was a really long scarf that was folded in half, stitched up along one side for a few inches leaving a 'hat shape' with two long dangly bits of scarf to be throttled with.
Then there was the 'auntie' (uncle's girlfriend) who used to knit me balaclavas in girlie colours - Nan found them useful for spotting me across the park at 'calling in time'. I was the only one in the group with a bright sunshine yellow (or lime green) balaclava on her head.
Knotted lengths of 'knicker elastic' to keep your knee-length socks (Nan called them bicycle socks) up.
:rotfl: at the memory of 'army blankets' - all families had these (cos they lasted for absolute y-e-a-r-s) and were brought home after being 'demobbed' or 'national service'. They itched like the devil  and were only designed for 'single beds' - ok for bunkbeds but no good for large single beds/doubles.0 -
4. animal fats - always cook with and or leave on, my great/grand parents thrived on it, but this was always combined with veg etc. i try to do the same!0

As a child from the mid 70's (showing my age here) my memories are of my mum knitting and making all my clothes at an early age. I don't do that with my own because a) I can't sew or knit for toffee and b) I can buy clothes a lot cheaper for my own kids (plus lots of hand me downs).
Every meal was cooked from scratch and I think during the course of my childhood I had about 2 Mcdonalds meals. thankfully my own kids have never stepped foot inside a McDonalds so long may that continue!
Edited to add - I agree with Thriftlady. I don't believe all this hype about saturated fat. The bigger evil is the processed food and the trans fats contained within. People are more fat years ago but didn't gorge on it (like biscuits, cake) stuff was cooked and made to last so moderation is the key.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

Hi merlin,
There are some lovely (and not so lovely) memories on this thread so as it's dropped from the front page of Old Style I've added it to the main 'memories' thread.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before (not managed to read all posts yet), but whenever we used to ask for pop, my dad always said we could have "Corporation Pop" (ie water) - oh how we laughed...
Also remember the penny tray and half penny tray and 2p frozen lollies at the Bob shop.
Used to have bread with every meal to fill us up as that was it till the next meal.Thrifty Gifty February make £20 challenge £21.05/£20.0
