Olliebeak after saying how close in age we were with similar memories now looks like we live in the same place. St Helens. I am originally from North Wales mining town and have noticed many similar sayings in both.

Snappers or Thunder claps, the free gift you often got in a comic, it was a cardboard triangle folded in half with a smaller brown paper triangle, folded in half inside it. With the correct flick of the wrist it used to make a snapping sound.
Twirlers, 2 circles of card, coloured in, with 2 loops of string through them, once you twisted the string, you could pull on the ends of the string, they made a whirring noise & the patterns on the circles used to blend.

I remember spending bonfire evening down at my best mates house when we were about 9 and her mum letting fireworks off and then having to send for the firebrigade as one went into her prized fur tree and burnt it down LOL
Sitting on my sisters window ledge to shout over to my friend whos backgarden backed onto ours .. about what time to call in the morning,
Having to sit outside and amuse ourselves as we were never allowed indoors to play! we used to sit in the porch on some freezings days playing hangman
I remember my grandad teaching me to play rummy and donimoes ! .. and sitting me on his knee and singing all the old navy songs !
Me and my sister dressed in our tarten skirts (the ones attached to vests) and our matching knitted cardies pretending to do scottish dancing over my grans swords! playing shops with the lentils and oxo cubes ...
Oh its all wonderful i wish i could go back just for a day! .... me and my gran used to spend house over the woods collecting pine cones to sit by her fireplace! i also remember my sister having her birthday party at grans house just after she moved in and we layed out the pasting table with all the goodies, jelly with mandarin oranges inside! and a homemade cake,
major morgan, speak and spell, metal rollarskates that tie onto your shoes, British Knight trainers, buying hubba bubba because it glowed under the ultraviolet lights at the roller disco on a sunday afternoon ....Hoping to be a thinner me in 2010!0 -
"It's not fair!" in our house usually got the response "T'IS fair, it isn't raining!"
Another one, when asked "What are you doing?" when it was blindingly obvious, was "Making wig-wams for ducks to perch on!"Eek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
You've just made me remember. Did anyone else have saps???
When we were really skint and there was no food in the house, we used to make ourselves saps. I don't know if it was my mum that told us to do this, or where the idea came from, but it was pieces of bread, broken up and put in a cup, then boiling water was added to make it go all soggy, then sweetened with sugar. can't say it tasted great, and I have never given it to my children, but that is what we used to eat, when there was nothing else. Maybe I should try it with my kids, next time they say there is nothing to eat when the cupboard is overflowing. LOL.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

(not sure if poisonus or not) but we liked them! ... and rubbing a Dock Leave on a nettle sting! .... not sure why but cant say it worked ! of my dads favourite ! rub some spit on it ! .....Hoping to be a thinner me in 2010!0

Oh, You've started me now.
did anyone else pick rosehips??? We used to pick them for the school, and we got paid by the pound of weight. It used to be a great challenge for everyone in the class to see who could collect the most.
I think they were collected from the school for making rosehip syrup!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
Does anyone remember APPEAL it was an orange power drink and was scrummy!
we were really poor my mum was a single parent in the 70's so we had loads of budget food, pancakes all the time (i still love them and she now makes them for my kids who love em!) squares of jelly, home made crisps, egg flip flops! home made potato cakes, bread and marg, or salad cream! corned beef hash yum, 10p raiders or 5p pickled onion thingys! we used to get a mars between us and cut it into slices and eat it slowly to make it last!
I remember when I had to have a tooth out and as a treat my mum bought choclate buttons from the market so she could melt them for me to lick off the spoon but they were so cheap they melted into a big hard blob and went unedible - oh how i cried! and when the hamper came in early december ready for christmas we used to unpack everythingand put it into piles and pick a treat for that day!
oh also used to have 50p on my mums pay day and go into the sweet shop after school and get sweets ouut of the big jars, they would wiegh them out to 10p for you!
Oh I've got to go and give my lovely mum a big hug now!Best Threads -
