Childhood & Sentimental memories

MRSMCAWBER - hope u don't mind me asking but where are you from originally?
It's just that the saying "there and back to see how far it is" brought back SO many memories of childhood "outings" for me and I've never heard anyone else say it....we lived in the Manchester suburbs so I just assumed it was a local expression.
Mum and Dad used to get the car out and take us out for drives, just like yours, and sometimes we'd get out for an ice cream or a little walk, but most times we'd just sit in the car and "look".......all the time we'd ask "where are we going" and get that same reply. Or, very occasionally we'd get "to our stone edge" - whatever that means - never figured it out to this day!0 -

OMG! Someone else remembers Galaxy counters! I thought it was only me. People think I've made them up.

Such a great thread - I remember a whole lot of the things mentioned.
But am I the only person whose Nan used to serve up fried spam with lettuce dressed in sugar and vinegar? Sounds disgusting (and I guess I wouldn't like it now) but at the time it was delish!!!
Aren't Nans just the greatest?
Kate
I still do that sometimes, sugar and vinegar on lettuce, is best on iceburg lettuce!!
Think my gran used to do it, as my mum did it, and got me into it.
tis yummy!0 -

I'm from Norfolk and we say There and Back again to see how far it is.Drives the kids nuts.:rotfl: :rotfl:
My mum always has to tell everyone the story of me going out for the day with them(i was all of 3)and being told "we could have picnic when we got there" after 10 mins of "are we THERE yet" my mum gave in and let me eat my share of the picnic.we had traveled about 5 miles from home....apparently i had beeen going on about picnic from mo i woke up in morning:o
I agree with Vixtress if my kids have half as many happy childhood memories as I do then i reckon I've not done too badLead us not into temptation...
just tell us where it is and we'll find it....0 -
Just remembered......
NYLON NIGHTIES!!!!
They were so uncomfortable and dangerous. I once danced too close to our gas fire and nearly went up in flames, my nighty had a hard, melted patch on the back of it! :eek:0 -

The nightie story reminded me of how I was forever being told not to sit with my back to the coal fire. "Don't sit with your back to the fire - it'll make you sick!". I suspect this was a fictitious piece of wisdom invented just to make me get out of the way so everyone else could get a bit of heat too, but even almost thirty years later, I'm still not allowed to forget the time I ignored it yet again and melted the back of my new school jumper. I didn't feel a thing and didn't even notice until someone else smelt it scorching
Incidentally, my mum and dad were originally from Leeds and both used the expression 'there and back to see how far it is', and as a result, so do I. I've only just realised having caught up on the thread (one of my faves on here at the moment)that I don't think I've ever heard anyone one else around here (Bristol) say it before either. Another mum-and-dad-ism was, when asked 'why?' to a question they couldn't or didn't want to answer, 'because there's holes in tripe!' I've DEFINITELY never heard anyone else say that one
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0
