I read desperate in this case as just really wanting to win something, rather being so desperate you're entering instead of just buying it yourself. I wouldn't rely on comping for something I desperately needed because, as you said mansey, I would be waiting a long time!

I agree it is how you interpret the word ;)

I desperately need a washer because I don't have one

I would really like to win a washer because my old one is leaking

  • Yes you are right, it is all about how you choose to interpret a word or a phrase. How about an interpretation of the opening of your post 'Sorry if it puts a downer on this thread, but...'

See some examples below of similar uses of this kind of phrase and their meanings:

    - I don't mean to be rude, but... = I mean to and I'm going to be rude.
    - I don't want to be offensive, but... = I want to and I'm going to be offensive.
    - Sorry if I seem harsh, but... = I don't care if I seem harsh or not, I'm going to say/do it anyway.
    - I hate to state the obvious, but... = I'm quite happy to point out how stupid you've been not to have noticed...

I will admit that was a bad way to start a post, using "but" was wrong.

I meant my opinion was going to differ to others.

I need to be more positive and to the point ;):D
