Bottom line is if you are not losing weight from week to week then you are eating more calories then you are burning.

Also, weight can go up and down from day to day so the best thing to do is weigh yourself every day and then average it out over each week to see if the weight is generally moving down.

Here is a calculator which enables you to calculate the calories you need based on the level of exercise you do each week. Mike Matthews' site is really useful at dispelling myths of weight/fat loss.

    http://www.muscleforlife.com/tdee-calculator/

The calculator tells you what you need to maintain your current weight. If you want to lose weight then Matthews recommends multiplying your TDEE by 20% and subtracting that from your calories to create your deficit.

I've done this and seen consistent results.

Maybe the sugar in all of your drinking is too much for you?

Maybe you don't do the right type of exercise for your frame/build? or enough a week?

Maybe you don't eat enough so your body stores whatever you do eat as if it was starving.

Right its 3 months later and pretty painful reading these posts as I've gone back up to 10st 6. Important to write it down. I know why: I've been eating out a lot, drinking a lot and not going to the gym for the last month or so.

It's not an excuse but today was my last day at work and there's been lots of leaving lunches, goodbye drinks etc which for obvious reasons I haven't said no to.

But no excuses now. I've finished work, have no free food or drink to tempt me and lots of time to exercise (although I have given up my gym membership).

I'm officially moving to Aus in 30 days and want to get back down to sub 10st. I actually think my weight will naturally come down to about 10st 3 over the next few days but we'll see.

I'm going to make (for me) the drastic decision to do no booze excluding 2 days I have events on but have some concerns about diet and exercise.

I've been reading the body coach's blog and some of the transformations are very impressive but not sure high protein / HIIT is for me. I don't eat eggs, cheese etc have never used protein powder and am worried 20 mins a day is not going to be enough to really burn fat. I do think low carb works well though.

    Does anyone have any advice?

As I thought it appears I was retaining a lot of water...10st 1 today. Scales definitely aren't the best measure but I've tried taking hip bust and waist measurements and that wasn't too helpful either. May just take photos weekly instead

No help as I am overweight for the past 6months and have three wardrobes of three sizes of clothes as I blame thyroid condition mainly because I do not over eat but obviously not burning off the cals enough...end of...I am 5 ft 8" and when less than 10 and half stone ish I look gaunt..no face fat so as an older person I do not need gaunt for sure...when I went down to under 10 stone I was sure they would take me away.....It is a battle to be an ideal weight and sometimes I wonder is it really worth it if you feel good...

I began eating peanuts not roasted salted peanuts but uncooked raw peanuts which for some reason I love. Amazon sold 6x1Kg bags for £19 and I purchased them at quite a rate. Often eating a bag a day! You can guess the amount of calories at about 63% fat which is around 7000 calories a bag! Needless to say I did put on a tiny bit of weight. Went from around 10st 4lbs to almost 12st. Happily I am now down to 11st 1lb now that I am no longer eating peanuts. Still some way to go until I am closer to my ideal weight but I am getting there. Optimizing thyroid function which I do have a problem with does seem to be helping although not eating peanuts is probably what is making the biggest difference.

Sufficient protein helps a lot too as I was not getting enough. And we all need to make sure that we get enough ;)
  • For what I know, losing weight will depend on the metabolism of a person. Some people will notice that losing weight is difficult for them and not as fast like the others. Perhaps, when you change on how your body burn your calories, you can easily lose weight.

Thanks for the new replies. Yup found the protein info on eat well for less interesting the other day, bought some cashews as a result. I've just finished day 4 of no booze but being at my dads does mean waay more snacks. Been partial to a bit of carrot cake, ice cream and pringles. Not good. Have been exercising 3 of the 4 days though and back to my place on thurs so no excuses.

    My advice

download the my fitness pal ap on your phone tablet, programme too set a weight loss goal. Ie you want too say lose 3kg in 3 weeks etc etc and basically everything you eat programme into the app.

Losing weight is not rocket science its being honest with yourself eating cleaner exercising more and sticking with it.

Wheres the logic in week on week dropping your calories who told you too do that?????

Ex bodybuilding diet guru talking here but keep your calorie amount the same, government calorie recommendations for men and women are there for a reason eating 800 calories a day then having a binge day is great if you want too gain weight and deprive yourself of nutrients.

What do you think happens metabolism wise in the body if you go from eating 800 calories a day too then having a binge day/meal drinks etc where you consume say 2000-3000 cals in one sitting. The body will store what ever you eat as fat.

I can help if you want diet wise???

I run 3-4 days a week and watch my diet closely as i have a metabolism where i can gain weight quickly. I consume 2500-3500 cals a day which a lot of people will balk at but i burn it. I run home from work 2 mornings a week 10mile a pop and i cycle two times a week same again 10miles each time. I then after work do 2 dog walks 1 2-3 miles the other half distance. On a saturday i do a distance run which is 10-20 miles if i dont eat this volume of cals i am knackered.

All this rubbish they print in magazines re 800 cal diets they dont work

Drop me a pm if you want diet help its no bother as i said i used too compete in bodybuilding and we have huskies we race now so i went from muscle man lol too skinny lean runner lol.

I just stepped on the scales and 10st 13.5lbs and I did eat a fair bit of coconut oil yesterday, which I like, so despite that things are going down without too much problem now that I am not eating colossal amounts of calories (peanuts). Still a few more pounds to go until I am back to my ideal weight but it's getting there without too much difficulty.

I am eating lots of fruit, bananas, tangerines, apples and a few plums. Lots of carrots, red onions and some beetroot and lettuce when I can be bothered to prepare it. I dislike this time of year because veg does not last because of the heat. A lot can be kept in the fridge but carrots are always a problem that I have found no solution to as they tend to go mouldy when put anywhere for more than a few days.

I make sure that I get all those nutrients for thyroid function because I do have a problem with my thyroid although I am not on any thyroid medication. My doctor did offer to prescribe for it.
