I also inquired separately about a closed car finance from years ago and was told it could be traced via old bank direct debits and all they needed was the ref from that, so there does seem to be ways to do claims from way back.
That is the key difference - if you have an active account or one closed recently then they can still have records, even if front line staff can't access them as it may be dormant - if the OP account was closed 10 years ago they can try DSAR approach but there is a fair chance it will be a waste of £10 and even if they do have records, simply showing you had PPI won't trigger a refundSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
