What are the things that you put in the toilet cistern to reduce water usage!

Options
Hiya

My friends were telling me that when they had no water in the floods - It took 5 litres to flush the toilet  I would like to use the thing you can put in the cistern to reduce the water consumption in a flush.

Please could you tell me what they are called and where do I buy one?

Many Thanks x

  • Don't pay money for anything, all you are doing is filling up some of the space in the cistern so that less water is used in the flush.

As has already been suggested, stick a brick in there or a sealed bottle full of water. Just make sure there is enough water in the flush to help your poo on it's journey seaward.

    yes its that easy

or put in anything that takes up about 1/3 space without interfering with movements inside. small coke bottles filled with water bags filled with LARGE pebbles ( incase it splits and bloks you bog) or you could bend the ballc0ck down a little as it knocks of the refill quicker

  • Hi,

I went to eco team meetings in my area and they gave us a "water hippo" I think that's what it is called! It is just a plastic sealed packet with sand or something in.

I think you can get them free from the water company - ours is severn trent it might be worth googling your water company and see if they are free? They expand in your cistern.

  • I find if you reduce the water you just have to flush more times
