  • shouldn't be a problem with Dell and compatibility. Dell just build the box rather then the components, if you open a Dell pc you'll find standard components inside made by the likes of (for example) ASUS, Seagate, Panasonic, Western Digital etc etc.

    such as what

dell is one of the largest if not biggest supplies of computers

over the years they have grown and everywhere that yo go from house, to small business to large corporations you will see the dell logo even on tv and films

they might not be perfect but for the price if you approach them direct you can haggle the price unlike pcworld etc by anything form a couple of quid to £100 like i did when i brought mine 2 years ago

Thats what this forum is for ;)

Depending on how much you are looking to spend, it can be cheaper to buy the components separately and build it yourself.

There may be some instances of at the higher end where you want a very specific machine, then building it yourself might save money. But for a general PC i dont think you could build one for what Dell sell them for.

For example last week Dell were selling a 1Gb RAM, 250Gb Hard disk, Core Duo machine for £180 delivered. With the OS licence maybe costing £60, there is no way you're going to get the PSU, motherboard, case, RAM, Processor and HDD for £120.

No. Motherboards are non standard, but thats only an issue if you blow one. all peripherals are fine.

dell used to instal their own (dell branded - probably built by one of the big mobo manufacturers like intel or asus) motherboards and power supplies which had dells own wiring arrangements and screw-holes for for attaching the board to the case. meaning if you tried to install a standard motherboard it would not fit and the power supply would just fry it when you switched it on.

however i believe this is a practice they no longer do. they supply pretty standard kit now.

but like all pc manufacturers, if you buy from the low end of their range they cut corners to bring the prices down - for example you may get onboard graphics but no way of adding your own graphics card later on as there will be no PCI-e or AGP slot. or the power supply will be just enough to power the kit supplied but if you want to add maybe another hard drive or graphics card you need to get a new more powerful PSU.

PC World generally aren't that competitive, but they do have offers which can be quite good.
I got my present (Medion) PC from them on an offer and I always buy my high quality photo paper from them - but only when it is on offer !

    Usual advice - shop around.

  • PCWorld are good when it comes to prices but because the are a very large organisation (Owned by Dixons Store Group, "DSG) but don't be sucked into buying something that one of there sales guys trys to sell you, as they work on commission and certain products give them more, plus from my dealings with them, they are not the best suited bunch when it comes to giving tech advice.

Why don't you spend a little extra and by a Mac, as they are so much easier to use, hardly any problems, and they don't really get viruses.

And plus if you use your computer for Editing etc it is a better choice.

My Advice, get some proffessional advice on the type of system that best suits (not from PC World) and then go to PC World for the system, and buy the peripherals eslewhere "Ebay". And maybe look into Apple Macs, as you might be pleasantly suprised.

    Hope this helps
