For the tax years that you completed self assessment you declare all income and expenses, whether that's employment or self employment. You need to do this in writing because it's over 12 months.

The deadline is 5th April 2016 for 2011/12 as I have said.

If there are any years where you didn't complete self assessment because you weren't self employed but want to claim employment expenses then it depends on the amount of expenses as explained in the link your posted, if over £2500 you need to do self assessment of under £2500 you need to do P87.

The self employment expenses are overheads on the profit and loss account i.e. website costs. Does this same rule apply?

I think I am asking too many questions. I just want to get it right.

My understanding now is that I have to fill in the P87 form for employment expenses not claimed and costs not stated on the profit and loss account relating to self employment.

You can only fill out the P87 for years you didn't do a self assessment. If you were self employed you should have been doing a self assessment.

For the tax years 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 did you do self assessment or not?

I did for: 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14. I did not for: 2014/15 as I did not need to. I have employment expenses (BCS membership) and self employment expenses for each of the years above.

So for 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2013/14 you follow the guidance posted earlier but confirmed again here -https://www.gov.uk/self-assessment-tax-returns/corrections

So as it explains you need to write to HMRC for overpayment relief and outline ALL the expenses missed.

For 2014/15 you can't have any self employment expenses otherwise you would have needed to do a self assessment.

So I assume you mean for 2014/15 you only had employment expenses. If under £2500 then complete a P87. If over £2500 you need to do a self assessment.

I created a government gateway account today. It appears that you can only claim back to 2012/13 online, whereas if you print the form you can go back to 2012/13. Why is this?

Well, I submitted the form by post on 28/03/2016 (for the expense incurred in February 2012 (£95)). I received a letter from HMRC today stating:

    "
Thank you for your form P87 dated 06/04/16. There are time limits for how long you can claim back tax. The time limit is four years. This means I cannot accept claims from 2011-12 an earlier"

I guess this is because the form was received one day after 05/04/16, which surprises me. Is there anything I should do?
