Cat eats elsewhere

We have a cat - that is overweight - he eats his breakfast at about 5am (after waking us up) - he goes out and, recently - doesn't return for about 6 or 7 hours !!
We think that he is eating elsewhere (a neighbour puts food out for stray cats !!)
What can we do to stop him from overeating - he is on a "diet" but eats what he wants/ when he wants
The old lady who puts food down is not approachable and in any case - is not doing anything wrong !!

I have 2 who do this, one of them is only seen here a couple of times a week. I've read the suggestion of putting a note on the collar (if worn) but that doesn't sound like it would work for you.
Sorry I can't be of more help.0 -
Are you sure she's not approachable? One method that might work is to butter her up and bribe her with free catfood.
e.g. if you were to go round with some cat food for her to put out for strays, then tell her how lovely it is that she does it, but could she please shoo your cat away because he's stealing from the cats that need it and he is now overweight so "might die" if he doesn't get stopped.0 -

No collar worn - the old lady puts down food and leaves it all day !!0 -

She is definataly not approachable - we lost a cat, 6 years ago and did the rounds of the neighbours - asking them to check garages/sheds etc and she (as near as dammit) told us to F* off - that there was no way that she would check her garage.... we assume that there was a reason (hostages held in there or something)
Anyway - the cat has now been gone since 5 am - still with no sign !!0 -
He has returned

I am not sure where these "please do not feed" collars would work for your situation.
But I might get one to wear myself!:rotfl:0 -
He has gone again - must still be hungry !!0

Could you write a note and drop it through her door?Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 20140 -
If the collar/note isn't an option then not much you can do apart from keep your cat indoors, which I'm sure he'd not be best pleased with. I do sympathise as one of my cats is possibly the greediest creature alive & I'm positive she steals from neighbours with cat flaps, but fortunately she burns it off as she is mega active.
How about encouraging him to exercise a little more when he's home with play etc?0 -

He does play when he's inside but he is 13 years old !!
He has been coming in for decreasingly short periods in the last week or so - he comes in - has a look around then goes out again - even in the cold temperatures and rain that we had a few days ago !!
He weighs almost 7 kg !!0
