Flight cancelled 5 months in advance

Hello
I have had a flight cancelled 5 months in advance. I am flying form Salvador in Brazil to Manchester in the UK via Lisbon in May 2016.
When I booked the flight the layover in Lisbon was under 2 hours. They have cancelled my flight to Manchester and put me on a later one which means my layover is now almost 8 hours.
We will have a 2 year old with us so this is a real inconvenience. We have a four hour drive after we get to Manchester so all in all it is going to be a nightmare journey home. As far as I can see I need to just accept this as they have not cancelled within 14 days of travel.

Am I correct?

Yes, nothing you can do as far as reg 261/2004 goes. Are there any alternative flights/connections?

you should have the options of the reroute or a refund. As for rerouting, the route you currently have via LIS is the only option with just one change so you would need to weigh up whether 3 flights or more is more problematic than a longer layover

I would accept the stopover... with UK passports you could clear Immigration at LIS rapidly and find somewhere pleasant in town to relax. After hours on a 'plane you will all appreciate the chance to run around for a while, something that any public park would offer.
