Click the 'Comparatives' link on the left side, then have a look at the online results for the last 2 tests (May and February at the moment).

Its a handy website which shows how the various AV programs actually do, with the on-demand tests being much more informative.
Personally, I use NOD32 which I am happy to pay for. Before then, I used Avast! over AVG.

    Never use Norton.

noticed the for some obscure reason they have tested AVG anti-spyware against Anti-virus products

no wonder it comes out bottom !! it's not designed for Live protection , the AVG ANTIVIRUS is the product with live protection

    quote from the site

On this site you will find independent comparatives of Anti-Virus software. All products listed in our comparatives are already a selection of some very good anti-virus products. In order to get tested by us, companies must fulfill various conditions and minimum requirements

    makes me doubt the results

Page 7 has the information on which AV programs are tested.
And they test the professional version of the AV products. This includes Avast! Professional, and in the case of AVG, their Anti-Malware program includes the AVG antivirus program.

I wouldn't imagine that the free programs detection rates will be much different to the paid version, if at all. After all, they are the professional edition, just for home users.

AVG AntiMalware detection results are higher than AVG-free because AntiMalware has Ewido's Antispyware (AVG-Antispyware) integrated in it.

I read last night that if you bank online with Barclays you get free anti-virus with F-secure. Is it any good?

    Detectionwise... yes.
Try it out for yourself to see if you like it or not... AVs aren't all about detection... usability, GUI, weight, support, and additional features are also important factors.
