declare motoring points

Following a van being impounded... car insurance was started. At the start of the insurance all current points declared. some time later the police sent a letter to add points for I10. i notified insurance points to be added.. they replied.. just let us know when you renew.
So believe that we handled this correctly. They are questioning whether the points should have been declared at start of policy ... but they were added later ????

Normally you are asked when taking out a policy to disclose convictions and any pending convictions.

It seems you took out the insurance after the van was impounded and had no insurance?

And didn't disclose the pending case!!

You could end up with a big bill or worse a cancelled policy over this mistake!!
  • That's fine, it would be standard practise to add them at renewal if they weren't on your licence at the start date of the policy.

Not if you knew they were "pending"!

Yes, and don't forget, insurance companies are like elephants (they stink, and exude large amounts of sh1te).
  • The question a lot of insurers ask is 'have you had any motoring convictions or points added to your licence in the last 5 years?', this doesn't including any information about pending points.

Even if they were pending most systems wouldn't be able to take them into account as the IN10 code wouldn't have been given yet.

He has taken the right steps and informed his insurer now who has told him of their procedure. They couldn't validate claims due to this being declared. The call would be recorded and if he is particularly concerned about the correct information being given he could get them to record this on file.

    .
You look to be quoting the question as it is asked by Direct Line (you quote them a lot - do you work for them?)

They are not the norm as far as their questions go (eg they don't ask if you ever had a policy cancelled etc)

Most do ask about pending convictions (and most won't let you buy a policy when the vehicle concerned is in custody as uninsured either!)

This is admiral's question regarding pending convictions, which is nearer the norm:

Do you have any motoring offences in the last five years, including fixed penalties, convictions, driver awareness course or disqualifications or have any pending prosecution?

Apparently the only company that asks this. Don't do business with them, on principle.
  • I used to work for them so I am speaking from experience. However, the OP has informed their insurer in due course when they've received the conviction. If this was a problem the insurer should have let them know whenever the customer declared it.

I'm sure if the OP was using a provider that asked about pending convictions then they would have declared it.

    No

Most others do ask (about "pending" convictions) across the board including AA/RAC/MoreThan/Post Office/Axa/Swiftcover etc

Don't know where you get this from?

Clearly something is up, and the pending points not being disclosed is a definite possibility (as the van was in the pound at the time or prior to the time of the purchase, there was something wrong with it's insurance, and the OP's IN10 mentioned (though we can't be "sure" about that as the OP refers to an "I10"!)

How are you so sure the OP has nothing to worry about? (Bearing in mind that you were wrong to advise us pending convictions are irrelevant as it's only points that matter and "standard practise to add them at renewal if they weren't on your licence at the start date of the policy")
