Fraud on my account - can I cash in?

Basically, my bank were alerted that someone may have been fraudulently using my account. Turns out this was legitimately me. The banks fraud department called me asking me to call back on a number they left me to confirm this. I was slightly suspicious when I returned the call, so I only gave them my name and address. They uploaded my data onto their screen, and asked me 2 security questions - D.O.B and Mother's maiden name. I gave the wrong answers to BOTH - in order to find out if the call was legit or not!! Yet the supposed fraud detector proceeded to discuss with me details of my account. I assumed the call was fraudulent - yet it was my bank! The bank have written to me admiting they broke the data protection act, and customer confidentiality act, after they listened to the call. I have a graduate loan of 6K, and asked for a reduction in the balance by way of apology, and incentive to remain banking with them (you don't get if you don't ask). They have offered me a measley 75 squid! Should I be grateful, or can I get more if I push a bit harder!

I would insist on more, at the end of the day they could get a hefty fine if reported.... think its around 5k but might be wrong, maybe tell them that you don't accept their offer and that you feel that they are not treating the incident seriously and therefore you intend to report them unless they make you a serious offer - which is up to you what you would consider serious.2007 £1749

They say the operator has been put back on his training programme. I don't have to accept it yet, I have to sign a form to accept the 150, and close off the complaint. No need to point out the irony in this situation. They gave me 150 quid, better than a poke in the eye, seeing as I didn't actually do anything to earn it! They say the operator has been put back on his training programme. I don't have to accept it yet, I have to sign a form to accept the 150, and close off the complaint. Pursue for more -or stop being cheeky??
I can imagine after the call with the bank your mind working overtime thinking how can I turn this to my advantage. You were not bothered about the data protection this was just an excuse to get compensation from the bank.
You kept moaning and wining to them and they gave in to your blackmail.
However why stop there do the full monty and take them to court. Now theres a thought!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
How much harm has actually been done to you? If you were to seek compensation through the courts, you would have to demonstrate that you had actually suffered some harm, and produce a reasonable calculation of the cash value of that harm. In this situation, I don't think you could justify anything like as much as 75 pounds, never mind 150.0

Think CTT's response is a bit harsh, but £150 seems like reasonable compensation seeing as you didn't actually lose anything as a result of their mistake.0

I would take the money - after all..even though you knew you had given the wrong information you carried on with the call. Yes the member of staff was grossly in the wrong - but you did not have to play along!I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes

I think the point here is that had it not been the OP phoning, and someone who was trying to obtain info fraudulently then they would have received it no problem - and then we would all have been up in arms!
I think £150 is a good offer, but as the OP said a £5k fine could go their way, maybe you should remind them of that. If this had happened to me I would have transferred my account and closed it immediately!I believe that I have the strength to make my dreams come true:T September Challenge £5 per day - £0/£150 :T0
