Thankfully the laptop has been working fine since. It was rather worrying this morning to find all my files and settings apparently gone. I do back up periodically to an external hard drive, but it would have been a major pain to get my account back to where it was.

Linux Mint. You know it makes sense.

I've tried Ubuntu a couple of times and really wanted to like Linux, but so often it involves typing in commands and I could not even get my printer set up so reverted to Windows.

When windows update downloads and installs well... an update the previous update that it updated often remains. :)

You can clear those that are unnecessary with disk cleanup - the extra 'clean-up system files option' - I believe it still remains in windows 10. Potentially frees up a lot of space. Also - when upgrading from windows 8 to windows 10 a copy of 8 might be saved. This took up 9GB on my boys tablet.

I was thinking the same until i had to install some drivers manually then thought what nutter wants to do this?

I was tempted to convert the oldies computer to Mint. Gone off that idea now.

Its getting there but not close enough.
