The problem with the "it should be taught by their parents" argument is that it dooms those whose parents are financially ignorant to financial ignorance. Whoever's fault it is that parents don't understand finance, it isn't their children. We have schools to deal with the fact that few parents are capable of teaching a full range of subjects; were I to say that there's no need to have lessons on A Level maths because they should just learn it from their parents I would be rightly laughed to scorn, and the argument "Since I can teach A Level maths, why can't everyone else?" wouldn't get very far.

I dont want the schools to waste time teaching the financial skills that I and other parents can pass on.
I was under the impression that Martin Lewis et al got that put on the national syllabus. Just as well because, as many postings on this forum show, lots of parents don't have the financial skills to pass on.
I want to be able to go into a shop and find a worker who can add two prices together and calculate the change from a ten pound note in their head. Thats what our young people need to learn, the basics.
The last shopworker I met who actually did that was over 80, and even she didn't calculate the change in her head - she just counted it out, much easier.

  • Personal Finance is now on the schools national curriculum. But only since September 2014

Hopefully in the next few years we will begin to see the beneficial effect

That's completely ridiculous and out of touch with the real world!

Start with a child's peers and then look at whether they have more influence over a child than the parents. That's a good starting point.

But before, you said ' those authoritative figures' which in no way can be construed as the child's peers - I can't debate with inconsistent posts.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Authoritative figures are those who have authority surely and authority doesn't always have a title. Or are you sayng that a child's friends don't have authority? When anyone, not only a child, changes according to the demands of, for example, a sub-culture or organisation or group of friends, they are being subjected to and are submitting to authority. Go visit the library and get a good book.
  • I just want to say thank you for all the responses. I truly appreciate it. My intentions are to better the future of children, I am a mum of one and I take the care of children in my community very seriously, I do a lot of work with charities and also have started a charity to tackle the problem of youth unemployment so as you can see topics like financial education has a solid foundation in my day to day life. It is very sad to see youths of today with very little knowledge of finance which has caused many societal problems due to lack of money etc. I am also a school Governor and i take my role very serious and personal. In my eyes i believe strongly that children will benefit from it because someone like me (a parent) would prefer to spend money on an app that will impact their future than a barbie toy.....anyway thanks so much for your opinions and the some not so helpful criticism.

We have to look beyond the four walls of our family and try and make an impact on our community.

Have a great day and keep more opinions coming!!

Although for every person whose problems stem from a lack of financial knowledge, there's another whose problems are solely attributable to the fact that they don't deem it to be important, and can't be bothered to give it any headspace. For example:

    Person 1:
I want that Xbox, so I'll take out a £300 loan for it. I don't understand how loans work, but I get an Xbox!

    Person 2:
I want that Xbox, so I'll take out a £300 loan for it. I understand how loans work, but I can't be bothered right now to think about how I'm going to pay it back. It's not important, because today, I get an Xbox!

Why do I get the feeling your real world doesn't include any experience as a parent ?

That's not true. You know, there are some parents who think that when they tell their kids to not do something their kids don't do it.

My real world includes 4 years study of Social Psychology, a B.Sc(Soc) and being a parent devoid of rose-coloured glasses.

If you have been brainwashed by so-called experts who appear to have perfect kids seek help :)
