    Thanks for all the responses.
PayPal says it's OK to send. Help pages give three reasons for holding onto the payment and the one that fits mine is:-
    3. There’s a higher than average risk associated with your sales activity.
If there is an indication that a high level of risk is present, your money could be temporarily unavailable. You may be selling what we consider high-risk items. High-risk items include tickets, gift cards, consumer electronics, computers, and travel packages. Further examples of higher risk sales activity would be a recent spike in sales, a change in average selling price, or a change in business model or type of item being sold.
This means it is nothing to do with the buyer (although he is a pain!) so I have sent the parcel tracked and signed for and am crossing my fingers :undecided

I have had this happen with a new PayPal account. Normally they release the money sooner if the buyer leaves positive feedback. Adding tracking to the listing can also help things move quicker.

I had the item packed and sent by a logistics company. It arrived with buyer on Tuesday. Today (Friday) I get a message saying I sold a broken item complete with blurry photo of something broken. The photo doesn't appear to be what he purchased. Spoke to Ebay and it is a case of wait and see what he does next. :(
If you received an expensiveish item would you wait three days to open it or mention any damage? Would you then send the seller an accusing message?

Why don't you ask him to send a clear photo to start with? Maybe ask why was there a delay in notifying you about the breakage?

If I am working a long hour contract I often leave opening parcels for a day or two as I simply don't have the time. It drives my OH crazy as he just wants to rip the packaging off- but as long as the outer packaging looks good I am happy to bide my time until I get 10 minutes to do it.

I have been accused of selling a broken item before now, which like you does irritate me as I don't see why a buyer assumes I have bothered to wrap and send a broken item- when it is much more likely it has been damaged in transit.

From experience if this goes to a case photos don't matter. Assuming buyer wins the case, which is about a 95% possibility then you can either pay to get the broken bits back or just refund and let them keep them. If you think they are trying a switch, then pay to get the item back and appeal to abay.

Incidentally my worst ever one was a set of 2 Victorian glass vases where buyer was in the process of moving, according to the ebay case he apparently gave them a cursory look when they arrived but did not inspect them. After he had moved house he went to take them out of the box and found they were both broken (photo supplied) this was 2 weeks later! I thought I had an automatic win with ebay as buyer basically said they broke during the move, but incredibly I lost the case- and lost the subsequent appeal. I belonged to a glass collector online club thingy at the time and merely presented the facts to the person who ran it who then placed this buyer on a warning list for club members to see.
