motorola c115 + T-mobile - no signal advice please

I have just bought my first mobile phone, a motorolla c115 it is just a basic phone but I needed one as my dad and sister in law are seriously ill and I need to be contacted for obviously reasons, the phone came with free £10 of calls, but you had to top up with at least £10 to activate the free £10 (well that is what I was told when I phoned them) now I find that I live somewhere where I can't get a signal, the closest place they told me was about 5 miles away, so the phone is usless, can I get a refund on my money? or how do I find out if other companies signals are ok in my area. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Many deals allow you to return the phone in 14 days if you decide against it.

The networks have coverage maps available perhaps on their websites or in shops, though this may not show quite enough detail for you. Can friends tell you about other coverage in the area?

For now, you can find somewhere in the phone menu (try the manual) for a function called either Network Search or Network Selection; if the latter select Manual. After a few seconds, you'll get a list of networks. Your own may (misleadingly) appear at the top, then the rest in order of strongest signal. If there aren't any then that will be a problem. Unfortunately though, you can't log on to the others to find out just how strong or usable they are.

If it's payg, you may decide to keep it, get it unlocked and use a different SIM; the downside of this is losing that starting credit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you haven't lost anything then have you? Just put in an orange paygo sim card - which you can get for free or £1 or £2 on ebay and there you go. No need to get a refund?

It'll be a question of the original top-up credit.

Lovelyjubbly I'm slightly surprised the phone's not locked, but perhaps drahcir will comment.

If they can't refund you could stick it in FreeAds or eBay

thanks everyone for your messages, I have had no joy in using it with my new orange sim card so we have decided to sell it as suggested, go and get a nokia and put my sim card in that,
T-mobile havent replied yet to my request for a refund but i have been assured that they will look into it, the phone, whilst stateing on the Amazon website that it is unlocked, I find it isnt so I am giving up and getting rid!!!!
    thanks again for your comments
