Microsoft are releasing the Beta of Service Pack 1 for Vista in 2 weeks.

I don't think there's any more to be said..
except perhaps if you have Vista, I'm sorry for your troubles...

So far this seems to be the same schedule that was used for XP. Is there anything that makes this out of the ordinary for Vista? As far as I know this is pretty much what was planned since Vista's release. In fact there's still a service pack 3 for XP to come out yet. I don't think anyone can really judge and conclude anything from sp file sizes until there's a release candidate. But it's been known since Vista's release (actually even before that) that there were features that weren't ready that were going to go into it.

And? Your point? It is in line with SP1 releases for every OS since NT4.

No troubles with Vista here...perhaps you should stop reading those Loonix fanboy lies.

The large files will be for network installs. Most people will probably have very little to download as they'll already have a lot of it through Windows Update so only those bits not updated will need to be done. They've already released a few parts already such as the performance fixes.

Just a note to the OP...

Recently did a clean install of WinXP, pre SP1. Had over 300MB of updates to install.

Very good point, most people won't need to install the entire X number of MiB for the whole service pack.

Because it wasn't available!!!! The only way it could have been was to delay the release of Vista until what would be the release of SP1. You may think they should have done that but people have been pressuring MS to release it for ages. They had been working on it for more than five years already after all. The same argument could be made about XP and SP2, why didn't they release XP with a firewall etc etc. Within a finite time you can only do so much even if it is less than what was promised. I'd love to hear of an application, os, or any other program that was released without the need of additional features and future updates. If there's one thing I can remember from my software engineering lectures is that it is impossible to say that any piece of software is completely bug free.

Well can't comment on that, I'm still on XP :D But as you say it is still a beta, and it's finding these problems that are the whole point.

vista problems are stupidly overexagerated by MS haters..I'v had it for four months now and can honestly say it's nothing but an excellent OS when run on a fairly decent pc
