I believe they have removed the ext3 sources from the kernel, but only because the ext4 driver is used for mounting ext3 partitions too, ext4 being a superset of ext3.

Ahhh! That explains why my ext3 partitions are automatically mounted by ext4 in Arch..

I agree with above about ext4 being the way to go. Until recently I stuck with ext3 as it was tried-and-tested, but ext4 seems mature enough that everyone seems to recommend it above ext3 now.

I've seen a few people suggest ReiserFS for /var as it's faster with lots of small files, but I decided to avoid it as it doesn't seem as reliable as ext3/4.

Don't forget that you'll probably want to set up a swap partition too, OP.

Ta, I was being lazy in the explanation.

If you're running SSD's F2FS looks interesting but it's not mature enough yet, experimentation only.

"ok now minted , typing on firefox in mint 17.3 , just trying to import favorites from other machine (ie) or folder on nas drive"
Out of interest which Linux Mint 17.3 did you go for? I find that both Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon and xfce editions are excellent systems. I have the cinnamon one set up on my desktop as a dual boot with windows 10 but mainly use the linux side. The xfce one is good on all systems but particularly good on old machines.

Also I know you like Kodi and you can set that up also in either system.

cheers , you cannot mention "kodi" on this forum as you get your post deleted and a red card , as per:

"We've removed a post of yours, Kodi is a bit of software that allows illegal P2P streaming of paid for premium content.

I did not know about that. Kodi itself is perfectly legal. I suppose its the talk about some of the add ons that is causing some trouble.

Anyhow back to Mint. I appreciate it is Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa but which one, cinnamon, mate, kde, or xfce? They are all different desktop environments and will suit different types of computer/laptop. Generally speaking the most popular cinnamon and also kde editions will be for the more powerful computers and mate and xfce for older ones. (xfce is actually great on anything IMO)

Linux Mint overall is brilliant with no issues re drivers etc. I usually use either 'synaptic' or the 'software centre' sections to download programs such as VLC and GIMP. Rarely have to use a command line except for the case of the now seemingly unmentionable K....

  • As the OP's a Windows man at heart he'll be used to Flash.
The reason I bring this up is that my Ubuntu is only supported up to version 11.2 whereas C5OD, for example, requires 15.0.
So, can any of the OSs mentioned cope with this, maybe with WINE or whatever? You can test it here http://www.channel5.com/shows/autopsy-the-last-hours-of-marilyn-monroe

You are right that link does not work. Nor do any other C05D videos work.
Tested with BBC iPlayer and that works fine.
I used the Google chrome browser as I do will all operating systems Linux or Windows.

Just checked ITV player (Hub?) after signing up and that also works fine. Youtube videos work fine. So far just C05D not working.

But then I normally use K.... for my media viewing!

I always had problems getting Channel 4 On Demand to work in Linux.

Google shows numerous workarounds but I found none worked on my particular setup.
