Slow broadband

We are with Sky and have their unlimited broadband

We are signed up until December but our speed is very slow (1.8mbs)

Sky have tried to increase our speed but no good and have said its best to get fibre but that will cost us £20 per month

Does anyone have any advice?

Do any other providers buy out a contract? We do not pay anything for broadband as we also have phone with sky

Thanks

I also have sky ADSL broadband unlimited and have done for a couple of years. It is currently connected at

    downstream 7008 kb/s
    upstream 832 kb/s

    Which is very good.

Have you investigated all possibilities to increase your speed? How far are you from the exchange, is there line noise, is your line ducted or strung on poles? End users can often improve their synch speed by improving their internal phone wiring and connections.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

what speed did sky estimate that you should have?
is the speed the same when using wi-fi vs ethernet cabling?

Do you know how far away you are from the phone and fibre cabinets?

Do you know the likely speeds you'll get if you move to FTTC? - from the BT DSL checker webpage.

If your phone cabinet is close, it'll be worth having fibre. If it is half a mile away, you might get around 10Mbps on FTTC - better but not great.

We are about 500 metres from a cabinet

Looking at those stats your line is performing within the expected speed range for ADSL.

Realistically, if you want faster speeds you're going to need to upgrade to Sky Fibre (or hold out until December then you can switch provider) OR pay whatever the termination charges are to Sky if you can find a cheaper fibre provider. You should get speeds between 16.5 and 36meg, a huge increase from what you have at the moment.

It may be worthwhile paying the exit fee if you move to a provider that has a good deal on top cashback/quido. I think BT at the moment are offering around £100, plus £125 pre paid mastercard when you move to their fibre service.

Looking on Sky's website though they seem to be offering sky fibre unlimited for £10 a month for the first 12 months, might be worth contact Sky to see if you can switch to that deal.
  • It sounds like you're getting near to what you would expect from ADSL given the line length. If you move to another ADSL provider you are unlikely to notice any significant difference.

Given that FTTC is available, that appears the obvious choice for greater downstream throughput.
