New mattress is too hot and hurting my back

Options
I bought a new bed from Oak Furnitureland, which arrived Wednesday.
I love the bed but the GBP599 mattress is so hot to sleep on I want to return it. I have slept on the mattress (fully covered with a mattress protector) for 2 nights and woken up constantly in the night because I was too hot. The mattress has memory foam on it which has made a 'firm' mattress into quite a soft mattress resulting in back ache and stiffness the next day.
According to the refunds policy I am not allowed to return the mattress due to hygiene issues.
Quote from Oak Furnitureland website,
"For hygiene reasons, mattresses are excluded from our 7 day (or 14 days if purchased online) money back guarantee unless they are unopened and in original packaging. All our sofas, armchairs and footstools are made to order therefore are excluded from our 7 day (or 14 days if purchased online) money back guarantee. "

Is there anything I can do?

Not much. Unless the mattress is faulty then health laws override consumer laws and a shop that normally accepts unwanted returns does not have to accept a return of a used mattress.

You could have opened it despite it saying it should be unopened and laid down on it for a few minutes and figured out it was too soft and immediately rang up and returned it but by sleeping on it for a night or more it's now used and can't be returned.

  • You could try adding something like a sheep's wool topper which should be more breathable. Can the memory foam top be replaced entirely?
  • The mattress description said it was topped with memory foam. I thought I'd be able to remove it but unzipping the protective cover just shows bits of foam all stuck together.
It is a posture pocket 2000 king, firm.
    I'm dreading sleeping on it.

Turn it upside down so the memory foam is on the bottom?

I was just going to post the same.

Also, you can buy 'cool mats' which are gel filled and absorb heat. We had a water filled version for a dog, who needed to be kept cool, and it was very effective. I think the water filled ones are only sold as pet beds or as pillows for humans, though.
  • The foam completely covers the mattress on all sides, even the edges.

I shall look for some cooling toppers.

My last resort is to rip off the foam and hope there is a proper mattress in the middle of all the foam.
    Many thanks everyone.

I use to have foam mattress and regretted it. It lost it's shape after less than a year and wouldn't return back to a flat shape. The dipping problem is well documented. Got back pains and ended up donating my expensive bed to charity.

Get a pure pocket sprung mattress, preferably a good brand like silent night

I have a memory foam topped mattress had it a few years now, to be honest when i first got it i was the same as felt hot, but not sure why but i am used to. i have just found this, maybe i am the second one

    CAUSES OF OVER-HEATING

One of the reasons why you can get too hot is due to the structure of foam. Memory foam is a dense substance and naturally it does not allow air to pass through it. Without ventilation memory foam can lead to quite a warm sleeping surface, and as your body heat is trapped between the mattress and your duvet.

Another reason is due to the beneficial properties in improving blood circulation. Memory foam reduces the pressure exerted on your pressure points such as your hips, shoulders, elbows and heels. This pressure relief allows for better blood circulation, which in turn means you are warmer during the night. Usually your body will adjust to this over time and after a few weeks you won’t feel as hot.
  • Not to ask the obvious question but how high is the tog of your duvet? Could you try using a much lower tog and see if that allows you to lose more heat and feel more comfortable? Also the weather at the moment is very up and down, when youve felt too hot was it a warm night?
  • I have ordered a 4.5 tog duvet, should arrive this week.
I think I will get used to the warmth but as soon as I lie down I feel the pressure on my lower back as I sink into the foam.
I slept better but ached today.
