Cheapest way to Brussels and back

I m based in between Liverpool and Manchester which is handy for both airports. I am going to be travelling to Brussels around May for a 3 day stop over. I have no experience in traveling to Europe and would like to know the cheapest option to do this by either rail or flight. I think by rail I would have to get to London and then another long journey so perhaps flying is best ? Just if anyone who has done this often might be able to give me some pointers.
Thanks

www.skyscanner.com is your friend - I often do the trip and 9/10 times the planes is cheaper than a trip from North of England to London and then Eurostar on to Brussels0

Sites such as Skyscanner will indicate the most suitable flights, in this case probably Ryanair from Manchester to Brussels Charleroi. But don't be tempted if they show apparently better prices via third party sites such as eDreams, BravoFly etc - book directly with Ryanair to avoid problems.
Charleroi airport is 50km south of the city, there's a good bus service to Brussels Midi station. Observe the location where the bus arrives, to find it easily on your way back, and ignore any taxi drivers trying to tell you that the bus is not running.

Get a job with the EU. That'll make travel to Brussels very profitable for you.0

I used to work in Brussels and commuted from Manchester. The cheapest way was with Ryanair to Brussels-Charleroi and then the shuttle as eDicky has suggested. The earlier you book the shuttle in advance the cheaper it is, although only a matter of 5-10 euros.
Occasionally you do get good Eurostar deals and it is a more pleasant journey, but in general its Ryanair / Shuttle.
Once in Brussels-Midi, there is a good tram / metro system which runs until late, which would be much cheaper than getting a taxi to your hotel depending on the location.0 -
you want proper cheap try Megabus or national express
I have travelled from Cornwall to Brussels/Amsterdam for sometimes as low are £30 return
I know I will get shot down by people saying why would you bother its such a long journey but OP said CHEAPEST WAY so"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0 -

if you want PROPER proper cheap, then walking and swimming will be even cheaper than megabus.
