Virgin versus Sky - comparison of offers

We are out of contract with Virgin media and wondering about getting the cost of our package down. (we have 60mb bb/XL tv service with a V+ box and a landline. ) This is the maximum number of tv channels but many duplicate each other ie SD and HD versions and we don't have any additional Pay to View Sports or Movie channels. We don't use the phone landline. Bill is currently around £80 per month.
So I phoned Virgin to discuss reducing costs and removing landline from package. They said that the bundle price represented a special deal and dropping the landline would only make the price increase by more than the saving. Instead they offered to add a TIVO box for another £5 month.
So have wondering about Sky. Can anyone tell me what what would be cost of a comparable package after first year discounts, (ie all tv channels exc Pay to view) and what speed broad band would we get. Can we get the same prices if we do not have the phone line or are they dependent on taking that, as they seem to be with Virgin?

With Sky, no landline equals no broadband. With VM, you can opt out of the landline, but the tariff is rigged so that the saving is minimal. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

If you're not in contract Call virgin and cancel. Ignore the offer they give you (but make sure your contact phone number is up to date so they can contact you). Then sit back and wait for them to call you with a retentions deal.
There's a giant virgin retentions thread in the Internet forum (but people post who have packages not just Internet deals).Sigless0 -

This.
£80 a month for your bundle is ridiculous. Ignore EVERY offer you get from the people you ring, make sure that have your number, insist you want to cancel, and sit back and wait.
When they do call, play hard but fair, be polite, have a laugh and tell them you don't want to leave, but you need to get the right price - any deal you do as for a 12 month term instead of anything longer.
They have ALOT of leeway in your price given what you are getting. I am paying £5 more than you a month and I get everything...we'll help you in the main thread under internet if you have any questions0 -

Hi guys was wondering if I could get some advice about my VM.
At the minute I am on big easy bundle with tivo box ( 50 internet, 130 channels and weekend only calls) paying £55.98 a month...really need to be looking at saving. How do I find out when my current contract is up? Thanks:smileyhea:heart: Mrs Lea Nov 5th '11 :smileyhea0
