Thanks for the tip about Affordable, unfortunately it doesn't work for me. They're saying drop-off is still charged locally and quoting $1000. The best quotes I've had , including drop-off, are National followed by Thrifty and then Enterprise but all less than $1000.

Last time we did a one-way it was with Budget and had a drop-off fee of $53 so this is more painful! Three states between but only a few hundred miles distant.

Your idea seems to be a good way to try to reduce costs, I'll have a quick try. The main problem we would have is the fixed itinerary. We often find the best bits of any trip are when you discover interesting sights part way through the trip.

I will of no help either. I was charged $100 Extra for one way between Minneapolis and Chicago with Alamo. I had booked an intermediate, but got a free upgrade to full size, an Impala with Florida plates. They would not let me choose my car like normal. I guess they wanted it shuffling closer to home. So car choice may also be a possible factor in your booking?
