What difference does it make as to the speed in the host country? Surely the data then has to travel from there to the UK eventually.

A lot of it is down to traffic shaping. While ISP offer 'unlimited' downloads most of them examine traffic and throttle certain types of data.

Despite having an excellent fiber connection I've started to get buffering on some of internet and on demand players. Until recently I've never had problems with the BBC iPlayer, Nexflix or 4OD etc. but lately they have started to stall and buffer. It's getting worse.

As more people turn to the internet for viewing content I suspect that ISPs are modifying their traffic shaping policies to throttle content. .Several have already stated publicly that they're not happy that streaming services are 'clogging up' their bandwith and not passing any of the fees they charge on to ISPs.

I want to try a VPN to see if it helps. I know there are free ones but not all are suitable for video so a paid one might be better.

What's stopping you if it's free? You have nothing to lose......Try CyberGhost........If it's good then you can go paid or stay free, if not you've lost nothing.
That said, I doubt it will solve your buffering problems and I doubt that's down to your ISP throttling.....
