Bank Accounts

My partner closed 2 bank accounts with Nationwide ( 1account 2yrs ago, 1account last yr) and has heard nothing from them since. However, we opened a Noddle account for him the other day to find these 2 accounts seriously in arrears (around £1k) and showing Late Payment notices (due to them charging him, putting him in arrears and then charging the arrears). We have contacted Nationwide who are taking 2business days to investigate but my question is - Can they remove these Late Payment Notices? How long does this take? We are looking into Mortgages and Car Fianance at present so obviously this is causing major hassle.

They can, if they were put there in error.

Did your partner not receive any letters relating to these late payments?

What are they for? Overdraft charges?

Depending on what the charges were for and if it is was Nationwide's fault, they can remove them - however you will need proof that the onus was on them not to mark the account with late payment markers and the error lies on their part and not your partner's.

I think you may as well put the idea of a mortgage/car finance to bed as you and your partner will have next to no chance if your accounts are with debt collectors.

  • As the OP mentioned, there has been no correspondence and due to this, we have no idea where the debt has come from - Again, this is why we have contacted them. There was nothing in the account when my partner asked them close them.

As far as your concerned, I only came here for advice, not to be judged. I have debts with debt collectors and he has an issue with his old bank accounts therefore you can't judge whether or not we can apply for a mortgage or car finance.

No one is judging you - it was only advice that you put mortgage/car finance application on hold because look at it realistically - you yourself mentioned you have debts with debt collectors which implies at least 4+ months of missed payments, that coupled with several accounts of the same, a mortgage lender will be saying if you can't handle your finances now, how will you cope with an mortgage? And as for car finance yes there will probably be someone willing to loan you money, however good luck getting anything below 15% APR.

Another point - did your partner check with Equifax and Experian to see if the Nationwide debt was showing on those too?

How did your partner close the accounts? Did he have written confirmation from Nationwide that they were closed? Are the accounts showing as still open on Noddle? I don't see how a closed account can be gathering late payment markers.
