Texts taking 2-3 days to arrive on my phone!

I have a PAYG with Three on my unlocked 3 month old Samsung Galaxy Core Prime SM-G360-F
I've noticed that incoming texts can take up to 3 days to arrive, often replies to texts I've sent (which it seems get to the recipient straight away), which is how I'm sure they are delayed somewhere/somehow.
Several days ago I got 14 all bouncing in at the same time, from different people & replying to texts I'd sent days ago!
Did on-line chat with Three, took forever & he sent me some 'test texts' - which did not arrive. Went through the turn off/turn on process twice & they eventually arrived, along with several others! Clearly a 'jam' somewhere.
Though the network signal fluctuates between 1-4 bars but mainly settling on 2 bars, & there is a small number beside that which switches from 3g to 4g & usually ends up on 'H' or 'H+'.
Three wanted me to do the backup & reset thing, which I am reluctant to do at this time. My son is seriously ill & I simply cannot muck about with the phone, particularly when I'm not sure what I'm doing!
Anyway, he thinks it's not a network signal problem (though it does seem to drift in/out depending where I'm standing, it isn't out for days on end). Reckons it might be a SIM problem???
He's sending me an unregistered one which I must put in then activate, not sure how but expect I'll figure it out, no doubt involving a lengthy call to Three!
Does any of this make sense to the more mobile phone literate out there? I could seriously do without this at the moment so don't want to be mucking about with anything that won't fix the problem.
Could you please help me understand if any of the above sounds logical?

Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
