Micro$oft Money question

Hi all,

My 84 year-old Father uses an old copy of Micro$oft 'Money' to keep track of his cash; investments; bills; and budget.
I know M$ have stopped producing it and Quicken went the same way around the same time.
At 84, he'll be lost without 'Money' now.

He's going to upgrade Windows to ver. 10, while it's still free, and wants to know if 'Money' will still work in Win10, or whether he should create a 'virtual' machine running 7 inside 10.
When he's ready to upgrade, I'll be installing Win10 for him on his current machine (i5 2.8GHz, which I also made a few years ago).
I don't know how to create a virtual machine but have a programmer friend who does and would be pleased to help my Dad.

While we're on the subject, I still think fondly of 'Money' and haven't found anything as good since the last, now un-supported, version.
I immediately thought of Quicken and was disappointed when I found that had gone too.
I've tried some others but they don't come close.
Any suggestions from anyone for similar (or maybe 'better') p.c. friendly programmes?

Thanks in advance.
A.D.

I upgraded from win 7 to Win 10 and my version of Microsoft money (v14) still works ok.
  • I'm still using the original MSMoney 2004 (UK) Version 12.0 issued for WinXP and I used that version in Win7/8/ and now in Win10. It still auto updates the accounts from my personal bank including the memo-fields. The only REM point is to 'get the update immediately' from the install screen 'before' running MSMoney for the first time and before loading any BAK file. Best of luck.

Have to laugh that you're referring to Microsoft as Micro$oft, yet are trying to work out how to use a bit of software they haven't charged for for a decade on a free operating system ;-)
  • Sorry.
    Force of habit.
I would use Apple if I was really anti.
I like and use most M$ stuff.
I use the '$' because of some of their business practises (they haven't charged for it because they stopped marketing/producing it in the UK, despite all the consumer desire for a similar replacement which exists even today).
Not going to make a big issue out of it, it's my own problem to deal with.
    :)

Thanks for all the help everyone, particularly the install/update advice, Richie.

Because the original works as well now, as when I originally bought it in 1998 and they went to the *.ofx file system. I can reload any of the last 30 years original files and read / print / manipulate them as i was then. The O/P says his dad (1) uses I assume his old MS original issued copy (2) we know it works as well now in Win10 and (3) I'm waiting to see from the O/P why it does not work now if that is indeed what's happening. Essentially it hasn't changed in 30 not 10 years, the whole install is only 21MB if you ignore the training docs / video's and other gubbins.
My 84 year-old Father uses an old copy of Micro$oft 'Money' to keep track of his cash; investments; bills; and budget. I know M$ have stopped producing it and Quicken went the same way around the same time. At 84, he'll be lost without 'Money' now.

So I have to laugh at anyone who wants to dump a bit of 30 year old functional and secure personal banking software for any reason.

    Take care paddyrg.

  • Which is probably why both Intuit (Quicken) and MS pulled out of the UK market around the same time. Despite those on here saying there is a market for the product - there clearly was not: 5 or even 50 people on a web forum saying they would buy one does not make a viable market.

In part precisely because so many continued to use the one they had used from umpteen years ago rather than buying the upgrade.

Intuit did try a last ditch attempt at forcing upgrades as I recall by creating a sunset clause in the software such that old versions did not download bank data after some time.

So all in all just another case of "use it or loose it"
  • I don't wish to turn this into a debate about why M$ ditched Money.
If you Google (even briefly) for replacements to Money or Quicken, I think you will quickly see that they are used as the baseline for comparing alternatives today and there is still plenty of market desire for them.
As far as I have thus far seen everything that came after has not reached the user-friendly heights they did.

Now I would be happy to find a comparative programme which I (at nearly 56) would expect to be able to spend some time re-learning and be able to exploit.
My point is that my Father is 84 and now has trouble talking about 'Money' without calling it "Windows Money" instead of "Micro$oft Money".
When I put him onto Money he was using Dos spreadsheets.
It was much easier for him to learn Money and exploit all the advantages of that.

Putting him in a similar position now and giving him a new programme of much less complexity to learn is not a realistic choice for me.
Thus is Need to be sure that his "Micro$oft Money" will be as useable for him in Win10 as it is in Win7.

I have already reviewed Win8 and kept him out of that.
If M$ fix the bugs still in Win10 though I believe it will be easier for him to use than Win7 and a realistic challenge for him to learn.

If he can't use 'Money' in Win10, he'll be staying on Win7 regardless of M$'s policy of forcing users to upgrade-software-they've-already-paid-for.

Anyway, to repeat, I am only interested to learn if anyone knows of anyone having problems with (or a good experience of) using 'Money' in Win10.
Otherwise I need to know if there are comparable programmes in existence today - There weren't when I last tried to find any five or six years ago.

Many thanks for all your input and discussion points.

I have been using MS Money with Win10 for the last few months with no problems at all.

There was a problem with it in August last year but an update sorted that out https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5301213

You would be surprised how many people still use Money and I have not seen any complaints about compatibility issues with Win10 for a few months now.
