Very cheap GPS tracker required.

Background.. Sister shares car with son, repair bills getting bigger. Tells him calm down, respect the car. No funds for new car, it needs to last.
Driven sensibly it should last a long time.

Front brakes were down to the metal within 7 months of fitting new ones.

Had to shorten the above it was like reading war and peace :)

Plan is to fit a tracker secretly and monitor his driving and speeds, but it needs to be cheap and something that can log the data rather than a always on phone signal. Where he works the mobile signal can be patchy so it needs to log the journey ideally.

Thought the techi section would be more appropriate than motoring, GPS tracking has lots of techy uses.

Anyone looked at anything recently that may fit the bill?

Thanks.

spys-or-us had some in last week at £1.50 , but they have gone now

just change the insurance to a company that uses a tracker , won,t cost much , in fact you will save money .

Cheapest Android smartphone costs ~£20 or even less. The only problem is where to 'fit it secretly' for it to get the GPS signal.

What about a dashcam which records GPS, he's only allowed to drive car on condition it stays on.

Sister needs to be a great deal more robust with son, and mere tech is not going to stop him driving like an idiot. (This presumes he's the one at the wheel doing unspeakable things to brakes - which it might not be - bet he has at least one mate she doesn't rate too highly.)

Take him off the policy, be the taxi & pay for advanced lessons.

When he pouts, point out that the lessons & the savings on insurance work out less than a funeral or worse a court case.

She's spent this long & worked this hard to keep him alive & educated - don't let him plus attendant Fates waste all that effort.

+1 for the insurance company option, something like https://www.insurethebox.com/low-mileage-insurance/pay-as-you-go-car-insurance-for-low-use-drivers. They provide the box, and the more the insurance costs, the riskier the driving, so worse the driving style. Maybe charge him based as a multiple of the insurance to cover wear and tear?
  • Do the insurance-based trackers / policy distingush between drivers (since the car is shared) ? When the son drives like a maniac, couldn't that end up reflecting on the sister's insurance premium ?

Thanks for the advice, she doesnt want a tracker because it will affect her insurance. Although its only time before he does that anyway.

She asked me how to make him calm down and treat the car with respect. I said he wont until he kills someone, the cars just a pile of metal.
Taking him off the insurance, will leave her not able to afford the insurance herself and him with no transport for work. he works in the sticks and does really odd and unsociable hours.

She did ferry him about when he first crashed his car, but having to do the journey twice pushed the fuel bills up.Doing twice the mileage daily than a simple commute.

Keen to avoid the tracker insurance because its her policy at risk, i doubt they care who is driving? He is the named main driver, but i doubt that makes any difference.

I have a plan if we can get data on his speed and particular roads. Send a couple of fake tickets to name the driver?
I wonder if that will give him a nudge?

I did think about a phone, but i know how hot mine gets with the GPS running. I wonder if he will get suspicious if a large area on the car is frost free whilst everything else is frozen and why hos battery keeps running down?

Spotted the £18 one on ebay but not much data, will it record the router and speeds and let me access it all in one go?

    Thanks for the looking.

PS. I also thought of a dash cam and just hiding it so you only get a picture of its hiding place but with GPS details.

Where they live its dodgy and it will get stolen if left on view. He will "accidently" forget to switch it on or find a way of breaking it.

Secret hidden GPS is the way.

If he drives stupidly we can go and collect the car and let him find his own way back. Maybe thats the lesson he needs?
