Sounds like you'd be ok. I don't have the patience for these situations, and while I can understand Spanish reasonably well, I don't speak it well enough for such an occasion.
That reminds me - he never paid me back! When some Venezuelan traffic cops pulled me over in my Jeep pickup a few years ago they had already stopped an English friend of mine and his girlfriend on a motorbike coming the other way. He had no money on him, so I had to pay his bribe as well as mine. His girlfriend was trying hard to hide her laughter at my successfully negotiating a discount for the two of us. I saw him last year and forgot - ah well it was only a few dollars...Evolution, not revolution0 -
Thanks for all the comments... I'm pretty happy about the driving, now I just need to decide on a rental place that looks less likely to rip me off than the others.
I'll have a look on TripAdvisor as suggested.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Quick update in case anyone is looking.
Getting hold of a rental car in Cancun is complicated. We booked one with Easyway (recommended in several places), exchanged several emails with them, and were assured that someone would meet us at the airport. No one was there - we called them and they told us that they had run out of cars due to people turning up on spec. Fortunately we found someone that could arrange a car for us with 1st Car Rental. Not sure we'd have managed it without speaking Spanish, but maybe.
Expect to pay about 60 USD per day for a basic car including insurance. Don't be fooled by very cheap headline rates excluding insurance. They are unlikely to accept a policy from an insurer outside Mexico.
Driving was fine. Loads of police around but noone stopped us. No issues with overcharging for petrol.
Chichen Itza: they do indeed have a pretty big car park for a little over £1. I can imagine that it fills up though, so coming early is a good idea. In fact coming early is a great idea as you will get in quickly and get to explore a bit in peace and quiet before the big crowds arrive. Note: if you're staying in Quintana Roo state and visiting Chichen Itza (or anywhere outside Q. Roo), remember that Q. Roo is in a different time zone, an hour ahead of the neighbours. We arrived at what we thought was 8am (opening time of C. Itza) and it turned out to be 7am.
In summary, despite the issues with getting the carry in the first place, I am very pleased we chose that option.
PS. I have not found any ATMs that are free to use - they all seem to charge £1 or so per transaction. Still the cheapest way to get Pesos though.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
