Agree 100%. Choose accommodation wisely, and the closer it is to either the Skytrain [BTS], Underground [MRT], or Public Ferries, then the easier it is to get around...

If you're flying home from Bangkok, then avoid making an internal flight on the same day as your international flight. You could miss the latter! So always stay your final night in Bangkok. Also be aware that there are two airports in Bangkok.Doshwaster wrote: »As I said, I probably wouldn't bother with a 7 day trip especially if you just want a beach but for 2 weeks I would suggest an itinerary of 3 nights Bangkok, 3-4 nights Chiang Rai or Chiang Rai in the north followed by a week in Ao Nang beach, Krabi.
As an attractice option to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, have a look at the Kanchanaburi area. Easy to reach under your own steam from Bangkok...

For a beautiful beach, with hardly anyone else there [avoid weekends] is Ao Maneo. It's inside the Wing 5 Royal Thai Air Force Base at Prachuap Khiri Khan [PKK]. PKK is easy to reach by road or preferably train from Bangkok in 4 hours...

Easier but not necessarily easy.
Look out for the motorcycles. Or should I say listen out.
You should drive as much with your ears as your eyes.
Yep. Not the sort of place I'd use to test out my driving in a foreign country...

The odd rain storm won't be a problem but rain for two weeks would.
After a scorcher yesterday, today was delightfully cool (23C), cloudy and rainy here in Bangkok. I believe there were also several rainy days last week. But rain in Bangkok in January used to be virtually unheard of. Conversely, some friends at the beach on KohTao, an island in the Gulf of Thailand where it's normally very wet this month, told me it's not.Doshwaster wrote: »Have a look at http://www.travelfish.org/weather/thailand/may
So with the uncertainties and apparent shifting of climatic zones these days it's probably not such a good idea to plan a holiday according to the regional norms. In any case, solid rain for two weeks is unlikely outside the monsoon season, which also features sunny periods and days, and a day or so with a bit of cloud and rain can be a welcome break from oppressive heat.
I had a great time with a rented dirt bike in the northern hills last month, but I would not recommend a first-time visitor who has not driven outside the UK to immediately dive into the local road and traffic conditions driving a rental car.Evolution, not revolution0 -
Most hotels in Thailand are B&B or room only. There is only the odd all inclusive , it is so cheap to eat out. May is not the best time to visit Thailand, unless you are looking at Koh Samui which has different monsoon the the rest of Thailand.0

I am visiting Bangkok in May. Have booked for two weeks, booked a hotel in Bangkok for 2 weeks as a base but will be spending 2/3 days at Chiang mai and krabi also.
I can't wait 0 -

Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi is a great combination but I wouldn't bother booking a hotel in Bangkok for the whole two weeks as you'll end up paying for two rooms on the same night. Most places will happily store your main luggage if you are going on a short side trip.0 -
It was so cheap, £100 a week each with breakfast ( I'm going with my son) it means we only have to take a small hold-all with us instead of lugging our luggage. ( and somewhere to store all the gifts for hubby and daughter, left at home )0

It's a bit unusual to do that, so best to inform the hotel that you will be away in case they become concerned about your absence. Presumably you're aware of the distance and travel time involved in your excursions.folkestonelisa wrote: »I am visiting Bangkok in May. I often do that. I find it easier to just leave everything in my room and head off.travelover0

Doesn't matter how many gifts you want to bring home you're still restricted on weight and volume for the return flight.0
