Getting stuff home from Ikea
Does anyone know how much Ikea charge for home delivery? I want to know if it will be cheaper to hire a van. I'm planning to move from a furnished studio flat to an unfurnished one-bed in the middle of June - so I need a bed.
I don't own a car, but I can drive, so I've booked a five-door car for a week from easycar.com, around the date of my move.
The reason I booked a car, rather than a van, was because I didn't know what my new address would be when I booked it. I only knew that I wanted to move out of my current furnished flat, to be nearer work. My plan was to give notice on my current flat, and look for a flat near work - but book a B&B for the end of my notice period, and prepare to put my stuff in self-storage, on the off-chance of not finding a flat I liked in time. The B&B deposit was only £20, so I don't mind losing that. But whether I found somewhere or not, either way, I'd need a car to get my stuff out of my current flat.
Fast forward to now - I've found a nice flat, and it's unfurnished.
If I'm going to book a van for a whole week, I might as well cancel the car - but I won't get all my money back. Or I could just book a van for a day, and keep the car too. If either of these work out cheaper than Ikea's home delivery charge, then it's worth it.
So how much does it cost?
Okay - so that doesn't answer my question. Can anyone shed any light?
Course - if anyone can recommend any other ways of getting good quality cheap beds home, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

home delivery
Most IKEA flat-packed furniture fits neatly into the boot of a car. But, if necessary, you may be able to purchase a roof rack from a small range of sizes that will fit most vehicles. This is subject to availability.
If you don’t have suitable transport of your own, you can arrange Home Delivery within mainland UK at the store for an additional charge. Delivery charges are calculated in zones based on your postcode and the value of goods to be delivered.

you purchase the stuff, then wheel it round the corner to their " delivery contractors"
who charge ( I believe ) £35 for as much as you can fit on the trolleyAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -

The car I've rented is a Vauxhall Meriva "or similar". So I've read up about Meriva FlexSpace - apparently it gives you 1.7m length with back seats pushed down. A foldable front passenger seat is an optional extra, giving you 2.4m length - but you obviously can't rely on getting a foldable front seat in a rental car.
Flatpack bed sides could be around 2m long, so there's no way they'll fit in a Meriva, if you don't have a folding front seat. And besides - Easycar might give me the "similar" instead of the Meriva. Next time I move house, I think I'll rent a transit or luton.
Besides - Ikea aren't that cheap for beds anyway. I haven't looked in Habitat yet, but I've looked at MFI, Argos and furniture123.co.uk. They all get their beds made to order, and seem to be cheaper than Ikea. MFI allow you to choose your delivery date at the point of ordering, whereas Argos and furniture123 don't arrange delivery until the bed is ready. So I'll probably go for something from MFI.
But maybe I'll get a cheap inflatable camping bed before moving - just in case MFI do a no-show. Any suggestions? Thanks.0 -
Have you got any local bed shops? We have a couple of local bed shops and furniture shops, that all do free delivery, and of course have a great range, being dedicated bed shops lol.
Could be worth a couple of nights on the floor / sofa, to get the right bed, at the right price delivered."It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

Sounds like you need a 'Man & Van' type service - usually adverts in the items for sale of the local paper.
You'll have no worries about using a big vehicle & also have someone to help lift all the stuff!

Yes there are some great shops - I can realistically get a firm-ish mattress and bed frame delivered at three weeks' notice for £350-ish.
I've also found out that my local Ikea delivery charge is £30 for orders less than £1000. Ikea do next-day delivery from the store's own stock, which means less risk of a Courts-type situation. The flipside is that if you leave it to the last minute before buying your bed, then the bed you want might be out of stock. But hey - if that happens, I could always go to a different Ikea - there's three in north London.
Failing that, I could make do with an inflatable camping bed from Argos - I think they're less than £30, you can order them on their web site, and collect them from a store on the same day.
Thanks for the suggestions.0 -
cheap inflatable camping beds in tesco extra! ive got one to keep me going in my new place!
I think it was around £10 for a double but cant be sure??0 -
Just a little word of warning re Ikea beds, they aren't your standards sizes- they are slightly bigger! MOH bought the Hagali double bedframe in the bargain bit ages ago and bought a decent mattress elsewhere. Found out afterwards the frame is a bit longer in length so there is a gap that needs to be stuffed with pillows to stop it sliding away from the wall!
We've been looking at buying a new bed and quite fancy the Malm one, but none of the mattresses are really any good, so we may have to go elsewhere to make sure we get a mattress that fits the base!:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0
