Downloads being saved automatically

Since changing to Windows 10, I have discovered that when I'm in a financial, utilities company, etc website any statement I open to look at is being saved in my computer 'downloads' folder in unprotected form.

Does anyone know how I can stop this. I'm sure it never used to happen.

As it is, I have to check the downloads folder regularly and delete these files.

The new 'Edge' browser, which is the default in Windows 10, is still lacking some features. One of these seems to be the ability to 'Save As' downloads to a different folder.

    I would either:
    • Change to Internet Explorer, which is still there in Windows 10 (from the Start menu, select All Apps, look in Windows Accessories and right-click on Internet Explorer to assign it to the Taskbar or Start menu). This will allow you to 'Save As' files to a different folder, or change the default location altogether.
    • Use something like Firefox which I find allows easier control over where downloads go

Thanks folk. I don't really want to save the statement anywhere. I want to open it, look at it, and if I want to keep it for info, print it out.

Papa Golf - the file ends in .pdf and has been opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader. I use chrome as a browser and usually, but not this morning's website (NS&I) enter through Safe Money in Kaspersky. Didn't use Safe Money this morning as this was a rarely used website and I hadn't set it up in Safe Money yet.

Anyway as I said, I don't want to download, only open and view.

Use the inbuilt viewer in Firefox to preview PDF's without downloading. You can then decide which you want to download and those you don't.

Chrome PDF viewer may have been turned off.

    Turn on Chrome PDF viewer

    Go to chrome://plugins
Under "Chrome PDF Viewer," click Enable PDF viewing.

I suspect my problem was with Santander as that's where I first noticed this, I select "View as PDF" & it downloads instead. I've just tried my electric bill on the E.on site & that works fine, viewing without downloading.

(It's a .pdf & Chrome pdf viewer is enabled).

Thanks hans 2. This sounded like the perfect answer. Went through the process of checking plugins and have Chrome PDF viewer set to always use, but still getting the statement ending up in the download folder.

Will keep experimenting, but have to stop for today (OH asking what's for dinner!! Would suggest he makes it, but he's just out of hospital.)

RumRat - used to use Firefox but switched to Chrome some time ago. May go back to it, but seem to remember it wasn't able to do something I wanted it to do. Will experiment with this too.
