They still pay the lettings agency individually by direct debit but if 5 of them move out for any reason the one that is left has to pay the full £1500. This is her first proper tenancy agreement as she was a student living in student halls before this and she didn't check/understand what she was signing. Hopefully this is a big life lesson learnt.
Letting agent won't be taking money by direct debit.
The tenants might pay by direct credit, direct deposit, standing order or even good old cash but it's not direct debit.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)

She might want to check if she is eligible for any council tax benefit (reduction) with the council as it has now been confirmed that she has liability.
She could also see if the landlord might surrender her tenancy. This might be possible if she could find someone to move in, possibly another student.
Certainly the minimum out come is that she is allowed to pay her council tax bill over a period of months - she would need to speak to the council about this.
It is a lesson learned but, to be fair, adults far older than your niece do not understand their liability when they sign a joint tenancy agreement.0
