Cheque lost in clearing

Raise it as a formal complaint, looks like an open and shut case so there should be some compo in for the OP as going to the regulator would costs nationwide a good few quid.0

Cheques do go missing at the clearing stage , a full days cheques once vanished after they had gone to the processing centre from the bank branch I worked for - your guess is as good as mine what happened.
The OP is right when they say that as the funds came from an account that was closed it will be a right pain to sort out so my advice is let the nationwide do it , register a complaint and let them sort it all out .0 -

The problem is that the OP didn't say that at all - the money has come from a water company, and it's highly unlikely that the account has been closed. What was closed is the OP's account at the water company, I can't see any great difficulty in the company reissuing a cheque for the balance at closure,0 -

Ah I misread that bit ! However I still think that attempting to explain to the various layers of contact centre agents exactly what has happened is going to be a right pain so let the nationwide waste their time on it !0 -
I think this is their problem. I would write back making a formal complaint and pointing out the industry agreement above.
I am surprised Nationwide are not aware of this, make it clear you will go to the Ombudsmen as this makes more work for them.Mixed Martial Arts is the greatest sport known to mankind and anyone who says it is 'a bar room brawl' has never trained in it and has no idea what they are talking about.0 -
any outcome on this one?0

Well we sent the information to Nationwide for them to sort it out with a stern letter on the 25th (the deadline is 2nd February). Didn't hear anything from them but on checking the account today we saw that they have taken the money out of the account just as they said they would do if we didn't do anything by the 2nd.
We telephoned them as soon as they saw this but they were distinctly uninterested and said we would need to speak to the cheque team between 10am and 5pm as they only work office hours.
So the battle isn't over yet - I think the next bet is to move out current, savings and ISA accounts somewhere else!!0
