Check out the recent ITV program (2 weeks ago?) where Martin was discussing phone contracts and iPhones. Basically compare the straight cost of the phone from Apple and separate SIM only contract, not only is it often cheaper but gives great flexibility if you go for a 30 day SIM as opposed to being locked in for 18 or 24 months.
Dealing directly with Apple gives you a phone that isn't locked to a network and may have better after sales service. Also, John Lewis have SIM free iPhones with a 2 year guarantee. Apple are sympathetic to claims up to 2 years, as that is the waranty in many parts of the EU. A friend had her 18 month old iPad replaced in Spain while on holiday there, it was bought in the UK with a "12 month warranty". The Apple store in Murcia said the warranty was EU wide for 2 years! To quote the Apple Spain warranty "The seller is liable for faults that become apparent within two years from delivery".
Don't forget the networks want to lock you into as long a contract, for as much as they can charge you... it's in their interests (not yours) for them to do so.0 -
With Three you can get 4GB of data for £16 a month http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Plans_for_phones
Buying direct from Apple, a 64GB iPhone 6S is £619, you can take out finance with Apple and pay £29 a month over two years, that comes to £45 a month, cheapest deal from Three for the same is £48 a month plus £99 upfront.
Better yet, put the £619 on a 0% interest credit card and pay only £26 a month over 2 years for the phone, making it £42 a month for phone and plan.0
