Getting a discount on buying a new sofa?

I am looking to buy a new sofa, and would like to get a good discount.
I am not that bothered but the old one is falling apart and my partner is nagging me.
I went into SCS and they offered an extra discount (on an inflated starting price) without prompting but seemed a bit pushy. Then in DFS I tried to get some more money off the sale price but they weren't having it.
Do I need to practice my bartering skills or are they not able to offer a discount due to being a large chain.
Any tips would be welcome, I have not much practice on bartering but the sofas I have seen seem flimsy and overpriced.

smile nicely, and ask if that's their best offer?
If they say yes, ...oh well, what a shame I only have "x" to spend in cash, today.
Then leave....they'll follow
It never fails!0 -
the sofas I have seen seem flimsy
then dont buy it!
its easy all you need to do is keep saying no to what they offer, but show your keen to buy and they will keep offering different amounts0 -
What is a realistic discount? If there is 10% off in a sale should I be able to get another 10% off?0

Atleast!
Remember the pre-sale price will probably have been artificially inflated to allow room to discount for sale.0 -
If you really can't barter....then buy online.
Don't use the big names, but find companies selling the same sofas with no showrooms. As for the flimsy bit, look for companies that say their sofas have a proper wooden frame!
Then use the money you have saved for a trip to a souk :j and practise your bartering skills. :T0 -
Have you looked online at sofasofa, divani and kirkdale?
We've just bought a new sofa and 2 armchairs from sofa sofa and they are great, paid much less than would have been at DFS and the service from them was really good tooMFW Start Sep 07 £79484, Now £587740 -
sofa sofa are great.
http://www.sequence.co.uk/1798.html is the website
if you really want to try them, you can go to wales, or they do 2-3 day shows at various hotels/arenas for you to see them in the flesh & jump up and down on them :j (sofas that is, not the staff...)0 -
Thanks, I will have a look at the websites, Although I am a bit wary of buying online without trying the sofa. I bought a new mattress earlier this year from Argos and I am disappointed with it.
I am about 50 miles from Cardiff so might go there for a look.

We have a M&S sofa and chair - they're superb - really well made and if you wait until one of their 20% home events (around bank holidays) - they're quite reasonable. Ours was a week late and they gave us gift vouchers as compensation too!!!!0

Try a local retailer, we have a retailer in town that sells quality sofas very cheap and you can haggle discounts, its not no name stuff either, they sell G-Plan, Stag and branded items.
The big name outfits seem to overprice alot so they can then discount it a few weeks later.0
