    price looks high but depends where you live,its a good failure for such an old ka, why not try getting a better quote for the work,got to be better than buying an unknown car from chancer dave on facepalm for £500 notes cash mate

    Can you get another car with 12 months mot for £400? Is the Ka reliable?

    If the Ka is known to be reliable I would spend the £400 for another years motoring. Buying anything at £400 may well need more money spending on it.

    When assessing my bangernomic car for whether it's worth spending for an mot, the question I ask myself is "can I get a better car for less than the repair costs with close to 12 months mot"
  • The first gen Ka is well- known as a rust trap, so do searches for other Ka rust areas and then get yours checked out in those before you go ahead with the current set of required repairs!

    I had around 7 further advisorys around corrosion. If i spend 400 on it i wont get that back if i sell it on as its 14 years old and on 91000 miles.

    I do agree it would last another year but would i feel safe driving it knowing its got so much rust build up. Pity as its always started 1st time.

    As is has not MOT now i cant take to it another garage so am in a bit of a situation:(

    It does, but can you reproduce the "advisory's" here? As an ex-workshop foreman and MOT tester, I may be able to work out what is liable to happen in 12 months. Crucial question is, how do you feel about the car? If it can be fixed for another year and next year does not look expensive, would you like another 12 months with it? That amount of outlay now may get you through for another year and allow you to save for something else then. Even as it is, when repaired and with 12 months' MOT, partex value is minimal.

    Those faults are not bad for a car almost 14 years old. Get another year out of it and save for next year.
    I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

    It's a ford, and it's over 10 years old, so you've done well out of it, but from here on in, the rust will not stop, and next year, it'll be worse than this year.

    The next step depends on whether you want to be buying another car just yet (to be fair, if you've got the money, it's not a bad time because everyone's skint til payday).

    Either get it stitched up, run it about til you get another car sorted and sell it, hopefully get enough to pay for your MOT bill, or admit defeat, get what you can for it and move on now.
    Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
    Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

    My car had MOT yesterday and passed (16 year old Ford Puma). Interestingly less corrosion advisories than last year despite no welding being done. I think sometimes there is an amount of leeway for the inspector's judgement on whether minor visible rust is recorded or not.
    Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    So long as it's still insured, you can take it home or for repair.
