Best Breakdown Cover

I have just had my AA breakdown cover renewal in the post today. I have been with them for 15 years and they want £250!! Its home cover, relay. roadside assistance and £45 extra because my partner is on the policy too. But I think its very expensive. If I ring and haggle they will probably drop it a few quid, they did last year by about £60 but said that was a one off and they wouldn't do it again for me !
I just wondered how much others pay and if anyone can recommend another company as I really need this to be cheaper but dont really want to compromise on the cover.
Thanks

I changed to autoaid breakdown insurance which covers my cars and my classic motorcycles with no fuss at £42.35 a year.

The only proviso is you need to carry a payment card to cover the immediate charge on recovery & claim this back.

I have used it once and it was flawless -picked up in less than 2 hours (free breakdown insurance I also had with my bike insurance said 6 hours+ btw) and I had the payment back in full in 8 days and the policy still ran until expiry with no hike in premiums the next year or the ones after that.

Frankly I wonder why I stayed with AA/RAC for so long.

I was recovered before Christmas and wasn't asked for payment. Looked into it and discovered they don't require payment any more.:D

Still do according to their site-

How does AutoAid breakdown cover work?
AutoAid is a pay and claim breakdown cover scheme. If you experience a breakdown, just call our AutoAid helpline and we will arrange for the emergency roadside assistance. You will have to pay for costs and expenses yourself, safe in the knowledge we will reimburse** any amounts covered by this insurance in approximately 14 days.

Just been through all the comparison sites and decided on Green Flag for us. Did look at AutoAid, but for cover for 2 people it was nearly the same price after taking GF's Quidco cashbook into consideration.

ADAC. Personal cover for two of us, full-year cover for any <3.5t vehicle in any geographical European country or country with a Med shoreline - €80. Yes, I'm in the UK.

    I agree, it's an absolute no-brainer.

The ADAC is the biggest Auto Club in Europe - the only bigger one in the whole world is the USA's AAA.

The ADAC is ran for the benefit of the members - not the shareholders.

Assuming you're covering you and your partner to drive the same car, look at Green Flag. They offer "vehicle" cover which covers that car, irrespective of who's driving it. I've never paid more than £100. £250?!!

AA and RAC have fixed pricing which is the same for everyone. Green Flag are insurance based and quote based on the car itself. This means that they're dirt cheap for new cars, and expensive for old cars (more likely to break down). With my last car, I found that Green Flag was cheapest until it was about ten years old, after which time they became more expensive than AA/RAC.

Since got newer cars and are back with Green Flag. In all our years with them we've made about four call-outs and they've always come quickly (within an hour) and sorted things out for us.

I do have to cancel and sign up again as a new customer each year, because the new customer quote is always lower than the renewal price, but that's becoming the norm with all insurance now. I get £25-30 back every single year via Quidco. :money:

If you like the AA, get a quote as a new customer - I bet it's lower. Then just cancel and start a new policy.

Insurance companies make their money out of people who are too lazy to shop around and just accept ridiculous renewal prices.
