I'd recommend getting the P45 ASAP: it's a matter of courtesy to let a previous employer know that you won't be returning, even if it's a seasonal job. And it saves a world of pain if HMRC decide you have two jobs, when you think you only have one.
Writing a brief letter resigning should do the job. They may accept your resignation by phone if you had a friendly relationship with them, maybe phone to check who your letter needs to go to!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Well as you all gather, i find all this tax stuff difficult to understand. I have just sent a email to the london job requesting a P45. so hopefully i get that next week. My new job starts on the 8th of feb.
So, once i have the P45, do i just ring up the tax off and request a change of tax code? or is there something pacific i should tell them?0 -
Given that the previous tax code was incorrect it might be simpler to ignore the P45 and provide the new starter details as xylophone has suggested in post #10 to let HMRC issue a new code. If that code is correct then the overpayment will resolve itself as long as it happens before April 5th, and is likely to result in quite a big repayment.0

Thanks agrinnall. So looking at post #10 and clicking the link, when I fill in my p46 when I start my new job, I'll be ticking box B. So dose this mean that any tax owed back to me would be sent to me via a check in the post or would it go in my bank with my pay?0
