Claiming Tax Back

Options
Hi
Just a question on how to claim tax back.
Last summer I worked in London for 3/4 months, The wage was very good and I was paid weekly into my bank account.
I was being tax heavily and a colleague said it was because the tax office would think i was paid 52 times a year. I was being taxed around £400 a week, the job it self is seasonal (every summer) I have just started a new job which is full time permanent and is salary paid so i will not be heading back to London.
I would like to know how i find out if i can claim back tax and how much?
What supporting documentation would i need?
Any other info i should know?
Thank you

Did you get a P45 at the end of your work in London?

Did you give the part of it which said 'give this bit to your new employer' to your new employer?

If you did, the job should be done already, you should have seen some tax refunded via your payslips.

Although one supplementary question: were you signing on between jobs?

And to add to Sue's questions, what was your tax code in the first job and what is it now?
  • Hi,
No i have not had a P45 as of yet as i would of been invited back next yet and i would still be on there books. Should i request a p45 off them?
I signed up to universal credit as the start of this month, i have not received any payment yet. From the time i left london to me claiming, i was living on my savings from that job.
Lokking at my payslips the tax code is W1 001060L. Not sure what my tax code is now has i have not started the new job yet

  • Not sure if this is the right info but looking at my last payslip which included a bonus the taxable pay is £20.466 and tax is £5376

You have overpaid so far. However as you are starting full time employment, it would probably be best if you wait until it starts, if not til the end of the year before claiming a rebate.
