Where do you buy affordable meat?

I use tescos for pretty much everything and was just wondering if I could be saving money because I eat a SO much meat (casual weightlifter)

I usually get frozen chicken breasts for £3.82 a KG. I prefer fresh, but it's always way more expensive!

Chicken thighs wings and legs range from £1.50 - £2.50 a kg

Fresh whole chicken about £3 a kg

Frozen lamb chops around £5 a kg

Beef is usually too expensive, sometimes I get a 1kg roasting joint at £5 or £6 when it's on special offer. Pay about £4 a kg for mince.

Not big into pork, but I've found frozen chops for about £3 a kg for when I'm in the mood.

I've never found a cheap fish I like. It seems to be you get what you pay for more than anything else... I usually don't bother with it.

All the above I've bought countless times and despite being the 'basic' variety, I'd vouch for their quality. Please only recommend things you've actually tried, I don't want "chicken" "breast" that's mysteriously only 15g of protein per 100g! :P

Costco is quite cheap for good quality, but from memory it is more expensive than what you list.

Have you tried websites like Muscle Food?

It's not where you buy it so much as what you buy.

Muscle foods for us. They regularly have offers and codes about the Internet.
We had a recent £60 meat hamper from them, I priced up on my supermarket before ordering and came to £90 ish from the cheapest supermarket, muscle foods is also higher quality than that from the supermarket.

We only buy meat from our butcher, the issue with buying breasts etc from supermarkets is the added water value, if supermarkets had to declare this you would be surprised at the breasts original weight.

I thought they were a bit expensive too.

I can get the packs they sell for less from my local meat supplier.

    The local butcher.

Ours also supplies local restaurants- so sometimes, if he has sold a lot of lamb shoulders to them, he has a lot of lamb legs to shift.
(Or any other part) Or if they haven't ordered as many steaks as he thought they would.

So, I usually go in once a week and ask him what he is looking to sell- he then gives me a good price on the things he has plenty of. I am always cheerful and polite and he always gives me very good prices.

It also depends on the time of year- prices of lamb around Easter are high- so I tend to be buying pork then.

All the meat is local and good quality. If you wanted a lot of chicken breasts, ask for a special price- you may be able to get them at catering prices.

If you have a local butcher, it is worth developing a good relationship with them!
