Hi there
My contract with O2 is coming to an end at start of Feb - woohoo!!

I still however wish to remain with O2 as the coverage is better than other networks.

For the phone I am after Carphone Warehouse are the most competitive - Saving over £250 over the 2 years compared to O2 direct.

Also if I use TCB i may get a further £65 cb off the final price so saving me even more.

However, if I do it online, do I go through as a new account or upgrade, as I am staying within the same network and keeping the same number?

Whichever option is more favourable for you in monetary terms. I think 'new' customers get better deals nowadays than the old (upgrading) ones.
It's worth noting that you have this choice for O2 only as, AFAIK, it's the only network allowing internal 'transfers' of a number from old contract to a new one.
With other networks the only option is upgrading unless you are prepared to jump through hoops and port your number in two steps through another network PAYG SIM - if you want to remain with the same provider and keep the number.

Unless it shows as an upgrade (unlikely) the on-line purchase will be a new contract with a new number. You would then need to transfer the number across - usually via another network but it may work differently with O2.
