in Water bills
We recently received a letter from Thames Water offering to fit free water & money saving gadgets, including fixing leaky loos for free. Is this an offer worth taking up or just their way of getting us to spend more? Maybe I'm too cynical?

Just read a few of the threads on this subject. Some save and some don't. It depends on whether you've got a high rateable value, how many live in your house and how much water you use.
Do your own sums based on what you pay now and on what the cost would be with a meter - a good estimate of your consumption is around 55cu.m per person per year.
We, for instance, would be paying £484 standing charges plus 28p per £1 of rateable value (which I can't remember what it was) we actually pay just under £300 a year so we save at least £200 a year, probably £300 or more. We've been on a meter for over 20 years now and it was the first thing we did when we moved here five years ago.
We have an automatic garden watering system which runs from April to September, I wash the two cars and caravan at home and we are at home all day drinking, washing & using the toilets etc. We do make sure that the washing machine & dishwasher are fully loaded when we use them as they use just as much water and energy as when half full.
We have a flow restrictor on the shower and don't spend ages in there either and the taps have flow restrictors as well. The hose has an on/off trigger so water doesn't run away when it's put down. We aren't particularly frugal with water but we dont waste it eitherNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Matelotdave,
Have you misread the OP's post - no mention of a meter. Just freebies0 -
Sorry - I thought it was offering a water meter as well. Not reading stuff properly
I actually took up AW's offer of money saving freebies a couple of years ago- a flow restrictor for the shower 9reduced it from around 12lpm to around 6lpm so halving the water consumption when showering. I also got flow restrictors on the taps so we tend to use less water especially when my wife is rinsing pots & stuff. I dunno actually how much they save but we only get through about 65cu.m a year between the pair of usNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Just had one of these visits from Affinity Water. Fitted a free new shower head, left a 'hippo' water saver for upstairs toilet and a shower timer (simple egg-timer like affair). They will only do 'simple' leak repairs, i.e. not requiring draining down. No problem at all with it and it's not some kind of con that's cost you anything.0
